jj2007 Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 I just found out over the weekend that my best friend was at work and her left lung collapsed on her and then her right lung wrapped around her heart. They have already performed 4 surgeries on her and this last time while operating on her, her heart stopped beating twice and they had to bring her back. She is 24 years old. The reason they have had to do surgery so many times is because her lungs keep collapsing. I really need everyone's prayers/good vibes to help pull her through. Thank you.
Liquinn Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Sorry to hear that. But what does this have to do with relationship advice? Liquinn.
curiousnycgirl Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Holy cow I wonder what causes all that! My prayers are with, your friend and your friend's family.
Meaplus3 Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Sending good vibes.. and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. (((hugs))) AP:)
Angel1111 Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Wow, that's unreal - and someone that age! I wonder if she has some kind of virus in her lungs, or severe pneumonia...? I've never heard of a lung wrapping around the heart. Our thoughts are with you. Hope you'll keep us posted on how she's doing. I'm sure this is tough to watch - you must feel so helpless. Hugs.
Angel1111 Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Sorry to hear that. But what does this have to do with relationship advice? Liquinn. Because friends are an integral part of the relationships in our lives. This person is looking for support. Isn't that a big reason why we're all here?
Author jj2007 Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks everyone for the support. It has been three days since her last surgery and so far her lungs are doing good. The doctors said they couldn't figure out what made them collapse all of the sudden like that but that smoking could have something to do with it. They said that when her left lung collapsed, the right one just flopped over and wrapped around her heart because of the extra space that was created by the left lung collapsing. The morning it happened she got up, got her daughter ready for school, dropped her off and went to work. She worked until her chest was hurting so bad that she couldn't breathe so she drove herself to the hospital! She is so strong and stubborn but she is determined to quit smoking when it comes to being there for her daughter. They are keeping her in ICU to make sure that the lungs don't collapse again and if they do, they will have to do emergency surgery again. Thanks again for your thoughts, prayers, and support.
Author jj2007 Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 Sorry it took so long to give you an update. I tried to a few days after I posted this thread and the mods never bothered to post my reply. My friend got out of the hospital about a week after I posted. They finally were able to keep her lung from collapsing again. Since then, she has also went from chain-smoking since she was 12 to quitting cold turkey. Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and words. It means a lot to me.

Glad she is doing better It's good she decided to stop smoking on top of all of that too. I hope she doesn't go back to smoking again once she is better from the surgeries.
quankanne Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 thank heaven! I'm glad to hear the outcome was a positive one. Now go hug her for us
Konfuzion Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Its good that she is doing better, To try to help people understand this a little better I will elaborate. The reason that the right lung wrapped around the heart is because the space where the lungs are in the thoratic cavity there is a vacuum in there that keeps the lungs expanded and draws the lungs to the walls of the thoratic cavity; there is also a small amount of fluid that is between the lungs and the thoratic wall to help create suction between the lung and the thoratic wall. So when one lung collapses you have a shift where the other lung trys to fill the entire thoratic cavity. And when you said she had surgery this should have been minor surgery that can be proformed at bedside where they will put chest tubes between the ribs which are attached to suction to draw the lung back to the thoratic wall, it only requires two small inssisions. I would be 100% shocked if the lung collaps was due to smoking, however if thats what she needed to here to quit that terrible habbit then great.
