Walter_O Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 First off, I know the obvious answer right away, but I'm just looking for opinions from other people before I make a decision. I hope I don't sound like some creepy older guy looking to hook up with a younger girl, but if that's how I'm seen, then so be it. I just turned 22 a few days ago. Anyway, there's this girl that I've been seeing around lately. Whenever we see each other we exchange a smile and a wave, but I always felt like it was something more than just a casually friendly greeting. I'm pretty shy, so I never got the nerve to talk to her. But today was different. I finally worked up the courage to ask her out (nothing big, just to have lunch someday). She said she'd like to, but that she's only 16. Before today, I would have honestly guessed she was around my age. I would've been surprised to hear that she was under 19 or 20. So my first reaction, without thinking much was that her age didn't matter to me. It's just an arbitrary number, and if she was mature enough, then who cares how many times the Earth has revolved around the sun since her birth? One of the reasons I suggested taking her out to lunch was because there's noting really romantic about it; no big commitment. It's a chance to get to know somebody and see if they're right for you. So anyway, I'm just saying that how old you are doesn't matter as much as who you are. But sometime after I got home, I started to think more realistically at the situation. I'm not sure from where most of the posters on this board are from, so I'll mention that where I live, 18 years old is the legal limit for sexual intercourse. But even if I don't plan on having sex with with her, even if the relationship is strictly legal and by the books, there are any number of problems that could arise. I could be accused of doing something illegal that I didn't do, I could be ostracized by friends and family for dating somebody so young, etc. I guess what I'm asking is for other people's opinions. How bad do you think it would be? Would it be okay to at least go on this first lunch date and find out "who" she is? Well, anyway, thanks for reading....
JoeNewbie Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 I think your situation is similar to a supervisor dating an employee. It's not a crime but it's not the best idea either. If things go well, who knows. Maybe she's mature for her age and the two of you will get along great. If things go sour, you could be exposed to a number of charges. Since you don't know her very well, be careful.
Author Walter_O Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Hmm... Thanks for the advice. Anybody else have any advice or anything to add?
LionLover Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 I would forget about her immediately. I agree. She's underage so yes it is considered illegal. You do watch the show on Dateline MSNBC don't you? Anyway, I am sure there are plenty of females your own age to be friends with, date, etc.
