people aren't that smart that they would like to believe

Lovelybird, I completely disagree with this. People aren't so dumb or naive. For many, selfishness always trumps the needs of others.

Okay how about the word influence instead of brainwashing. You can be heavily influenced by something and still be responsible for your actions

Jake, you've found another pet peeve of mine. People who can be led by the nose ring, who are easily influenced by public opinion, be it negative or positive. It's so easy not to have to think for oneself, even though deep inside, they know better.

if people are so smart, how do they have a messy and despairing life?

They live for the immediate gratification v. the long-term goal.

many people have long-term goals, just don't set them right. can you imagine if a person set a wrong goal, and get a good result? they still aren't that smart as they want to believe

No one has perfect vision that will take in every possibility. It's the choices you make along the way that will ultimately get you to where you want to go. Is this a matter of stupidity or simply making an incorrect decision usually based on the now v. the end-goal in mind? I have more faith, if that's what you want to call it, in humankind for their intelligence.

Well if we think people ARE easily led, which I do,that would explain much of the world today, such as male/female distrust, promiscuity, homosexuality, staying single, etc etc.

not every choice is about now v. long-term. I agree with you the choice you make will get you to where you want to go. But behind choice, is our mind, our heart, our value systems. If a person is influenced by bad sources, he is going to choose bad.

suppose a child was born in a family, his parents told him that he is worthless, then this child would most of time believe he is worthless, and choose what bad for him. A person was told in his whole life that certain race is evil, then he mostly likely believes that and do something harmful to that race. This is the importance of influence to our mind. How many women here believe that if they copy Sex and the city, they would have a happy ending like that? many. do they think they are smart? yes

With mass media and exposure to the outside world, it doesn't take much for children to realize that they're families are dysfunctional family units. From there, as they mature, they learn more about the world around them and then make personal choices as to whether they're going to break the dysfunctional cycle or not.

While I agree that SITC is a silly show, others might feel differently. It's not for me to say whether this choice is correct or incorrect for them. I can only say that it's incorrect for me.

Lovely, exactly...

Turn on any MTV show, and you are bombarded with how cool it is to be gay... Impressionable teens raised by the tv soak this up...Thus it is not uncommon for teens these days to be gay, or bi, etc.. Just one example..

Grrrrr....their families, not they're families.

I can't think of one tv show that displays functional family units...Sopranos? SITC? Will and grace? tila tequila?

.

then what do you think so many adults visit therapist so often? few can change their patterns merely through experience and own knowledge, most of them just go circles

IMO God is the hope and solution. when Holy Spirit dwells in us, He brings corrections, teachings, revelations. compare to therapist who don't really know themselves most of time, God is most effective and only God knows human heart so well :D, besides that give us eternal life and hope

vonerik012, yes, that is kinda sad

Because people are capable of recognizing dysfunction these days and aren't afraid to do something about it v. being as concerned about the stigmata of seeing a therapist, back in the 1940s and even up to the 1990's.

Lovelybird, this is where we part ways. Your belief in religion is your own. Try not to push your agenda of religion onto those of us who've fallen away...for good reason. Religion has caused some of the biggest attrocities in the history of mankind.

You have a point although the things I can say about religion would probably offend you into the next century. Don't make me do it!

although I have no interests to debate my belief here, I won't be offended by what you say about it because I know what they are and reasons behind it :)

And I'm also not interested in debating religion in this thread. I'll save it for another time when it's in the proper thread and forum.

Don't think I don't respect the things you have to offer to this site. Just not anything to do with organized religion. ;)

Well...she does smoke. I hope she doesn't do that around her kids, that is a bad role model mom then.
