JooSee Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 My boyfriend told me this morning that I am in need of an attitude change in regards to my fears/worry about starting graduate school in a few days. I am totally PMSing right now too, so I'm sure that is not helpful, but basically I am terrified about starting. My good friend said she wished she could be me because she wishes to go back to school to and my program sounds really exciting. Why dont I feel that way too? I used to, when I was in the early phase of applying to this school. Now, that the time has come, I'm totally worried that I don't have what it takes, or that I can't write, or that i'll have no free/personal time, and will be in over my head. So, in sharing these thoughts/feelings with my boyfriend, he suggessted I change my attitude. He said, "you are not 21 anymore, and you will take this much more seriously than you did as an undergrad...you just need to be positive and change your attitude." Now I wonder what does that really mean? Does that mean I need to convince myself that I am NOT REALLY worried? How does one just do that? Do I just lie to themselves over and over, pretending that the certain feelings/worries i have don't exist? What does it really mean, and how does one really go about CHANGING THEIR ATTITUDE? And I am asking this for many different reasons as I tend to see the glass half empty most of the time.
LonePoster Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Don't worry about it. It's normal to be worried when starting something new, with new people. Just don't let the thought of it ruin your life up until then . You'll love it, just get through the hard, waiting stage and you'll have a real ball
NewSunrise Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 What your BF is telling you is: 1. It's time to grow up. 2. He knows you can handle it. 3. Take it easy on yourself. 4. Don't fret too much about everything all at once. 5. Take one day at a time. 6. You're coming across like a control freak even if you're not. 7. You're all over the place. 8. Concentrate one thing at a time. 9. He doesn't like personal, mental and emotional disorganization which you are exhibiting. 10. Be positive and excited about pursuing grad school as he is. My take? 1. He admires someone who is on the same intellectual level as he is. 2. He is very serious about attaining his goal. 3. He wants someone who is mature, level headed and calm. 4. He wants someone who will be just as successful as he is. 5. He wants someone who is emotionally stable. 6. He want someone with a positive attitude 7. He doesn't like a complainer or whiner. Nothing wrong with all the above.
