Trialbyfire Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I am part of the Grammar Gestapo Speaking of eloquence...
pandagirl Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I talked to three friends about this: Friend #1, Art School grad: You're being way too picky about this. It's just a casual email! Friend #2, academic: I see what you mean -- I think that is weird, but it doesn't mean he's not nice or that you shouldn't meet him. Friend #3, editor/writer: That would bother me, too. I don't think you're being weird. Friend #2 is my best friend of 22 years. She knows me better than anyone else, and she is a clinical psychologist. She believes I am using this as an excuse to avoid meeting anyone new, but when I pointed out to her: "Okay, but do you think any of my friends would ever write an email like that?" She said: "You're right. No one you are friends with would make those mistakes." So, maybe I just choose/naturally gravitate towards people who are more anal brainiacs?
StartingOver07 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 If English is his second language, this would be understandable. Beyond that, it makes no sense. After "X" number of years in school, you do learn the basics which includes the word restaurant... You'd be surprised, TBF. I teach for a university and many of my colleagues frequently make basic errors in spelling and grammar. I find myself wondering if this is what they model for their students!
Green Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 If he cant spell or use grahmar properly I say ditch this doof

If you think of the confines in which this "prof" is contacting Cherry, do you think that the average prof looking to impress a woman on a dating site, isn't going to put in some reasonable effort?

I think that some "profs" are just being sloppy/fast and others simply don't know. Still others think it isn't important. This is not limited to the academic community. We are gradually shifting from a knowledge-based society to an opinion-based one. Standards and rules are seen as unnecessary and even detrimental. I don't know which category Cherry's prof falls into. I just know that "resteraunt" would put me off. But I am a language snob.
Author Cherry Blossom 35 Posted August 22, 2008 Author Posted August 22, 2008 Bizarrely, his writing has improved since we've moved to email from the online site. Only one mistake so far Now I am supposed to meet him on Sunday. We talked about the neighborhood in which we plan to meet, but he has not made any suggestions as to where we will go. He said he would call me Sunday morning to "figure it out". I say, figure it out!

Author Cherry Blossom 35 Posted August 22, 2008 Author Posted August 22, 2008 Thanks. I will let you all know, of course!
endlesstrains Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Personally I think it is pretty shallow to judge someone solely on their spelling. I spell pretty well without effort and grammar comes easily to me, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else. I am bad at math but I don't think that makes me stupid or unintelligent... it's just a weakness. Similarly, some people are weak with spelling. My boyfriend is a notoriously bad speller but a wonderful person. He is smart and educated, but he is also somewhat dyslexic and has trouble with the correct spelling of words. English can be a confusing language, even if it's your first... so I think anyone here who would write someone off just because of some misspelled words is passing up a lot of otherwise great people.
