Hello!

Hubby and I have been having some VERY serious trust issues, and he has agreed that to make me feel better, he will install a keystroke logging software if I find one that does not take up too much space and use up too much energy on his computer.

He is a computer nerd, lol, and does not want anything to interfere with his work, pc, etc.

He was very much against this all at first, but I personally feel better about it if he knows full well that it's there than to try to go behind his back.

Any info about them or links would be great!

Thanks

Somehow I get the feeling since he knows computers so well, he'll be able to do something behind your back, maybe install it and uninstall it to suit him best, if you know what I'm getting at.

Best way to catch him is hire a PI.

since he knows that its there of course he isnt going to do anything.

That people do this type of thing to their husbands/wives is totally bizarre to me.

Keyloggers are most effective when someone isn't aware of them. If he's technical, he's just going to avoid the use of this computer, to do anything he doesn't want you to see. More than likely, he'll use his cellphone or PDA to access the internet to use some form of webmail/site or just text/call someone.

Check his cellphone bills instead and better yet, as wwiu mentions, get a PI. I used a PI who was worth every penny spent.

If he is a computer nerd, I wouldn't use an keylogger, instead I'll go for a rootkit.

Better yet, skip the keylogger, go for an comprehensive approach.

Private Investigator for stuff you can not get.

Rootkit to hide in plain sight.

Proxy server to capture the packets between the computer and the Internet.

BTW, depending on the state you live in; you might be breaking a few laws.

Some of us need facts, if our gut instinct acts up. There's no way I would divorce someone simply because my spidey sense was tingling.

It sounds like the OP has had issues with her SO previously, so she needs something concrete to help alleviate her existing trust issues.

If the guy is a computer/networking geek and even reasonably intelligent, you're not going to catch him with technology, especially if he knows you're looking.

He's going to go out and buy a pay-as-you-go cell phone, he's going to use phones and PCs at work. He's going to disable the keylogger or whatever at home. Or better yet, fake the logs so it looks like he's going to innocent sites, shopping for flowers...

PI? Maybe, but do you think that PI is going to hack his office network?

So how do you catch him? You'd be better off sniffing him and his cloths for the smell of another woman or soap. Polygraphs? Sodium pentathol? Other than having someone watch him 24/7, there's no sure way.

Too bad no one's making chastity belts anymore. ;)

A PI will catch any physical affairs. He has to see her to have a physical relationship with her.

if you're wondering this much - then there is most likely some merit for your concern.

if he's offering to help, it means that he's not using THAT form of communication to keep in touch with the OW (i'm assuming it's an OW in question).

who's to say he won't use another cell phone, computer at the library or internet cafe, add different e-mail addresses, instant messenger or phone from work?

if he wants to - he will find lots of ways to keep in touch without your knowledge.

you could place one of those voice activated recorders that look like a pen or a lighter in his car or office... just a thought.

We will never tell you dark one. Use the force, Luke.

Rootkits are very hard to find compared to regular keyloggers because they hide from detection by burying itself deep into the computers operating system, e.g. Windows XP.

Instead of a keylogger...buy your H a new hardrive, and have a "geek squad" or some similar EXTERNAL computer saavy tech install it and transfer over the software your H needs...and then send his hard drive in to be analyzed. There are lab companies that will do this for a price.

If he's given the opportunity, if he's made aware of your plans, you can bet he's going to take some pretty massive steps to go underground if he is doing something.

If he IS involved in an affair or activity that he's hiding, he'd only offer up the chance to get caught if he knew that he had taken measures to avoid that.

The other option would be to have him take a polygraph test.

Trying to catch him on "his turf" (the computer) isn't going to work if he has any reason to think you'll be looking there...so bust him in a way he can't hide his tracks.

What do you suspect he's up to? Cheating? Porn?

Installing keyloggers or rootkits on computers today is tougher than you realize..

If he is a nerd he most likely has anti malware, antivirus, and anti adware software running on his computer and I can tell you for example that Norton 360 will find them all...

A person who maintains his computer properly today runs those scans all the time they would be disabled within a matter of mins by the scan software.

there are only a few keyloggers out there that are undetectable and they are NOT free.. A 100 bucks or so for one computer..some are a bit more..

Putting a keylogger on a computer of a nerd who already knows you are installing it is just dumb..

They almost all use the same keystroke combination(s)( unless you change it ) to run the main control panel for the user to turn it off temporarily..

One I have used before that isn't detectable easily is from SpectorSoft called Spector Professional

Not to take away from the OP post, but I was thinking a rootkit was something that came from another site you vist, like a possible virus/trojan. So a rootkit is something that is purposly installed on the computer by someone? Sorry, just trying to understand more.

I aslo agree that installing a keylogger on a computer of someone who is already pretty much computer savvy probably isn't the best idea.

How do we know it is not the OP's nerd trying something??? hmmm....

More than enough antivirus programs employ heuristic analysis. This can pick off many types of keyloggers and rootkits.

A few years ago, my sister had a 'friend' (I used this word loosely) who apparently sent her an email with something in it that allowed her to track what my sister did. She also phycially put something on my sister's computer, so I don't know which program was the true culpret but this friend was able to remotely see everything my sister did on her computer.

My sister would've never discovered it except that this friend of hers got drunk one night and told someone what she did. Then these people told my sister. It turns out that this friend had done the same thing to the people she drunkenly confessed to. She's a real nutcase, needless to say. When my sister had her computer looked at, the guy found it but said it was so invasive that the only way to be certain that it was gone was to get a new hard drive.

I was always amazed by this and wondered what on earth she did that could be so silent but so invasive. It's a little unnerving. Anyone heard of this?

I have no idea which software your sister's friend put onto her computer. There are quite different types of harvest software, remote desktop access programs that can do this. For all you know, it might be home-made.

More importantly, everyone should always set up levels of security and log off when they're not using their computers.

If you're going to allow other people to access your computer, set up the different levels of access, of which one has only user abilities v. administration abilities. This ensures they can't install any type of program onto your computer, without your permission.

Yep. Even seen some custom stuff that are truly interesting. Like the cameras built into the Mac's, some can be turned on w/o one noticing. For Windows, I've seen those that can hide and eject your CD, view the contents of your screen, avoid virtual machines for detection, avoids detection methods, 64bit computers, encryption, makes you think AV is running when it is not, commercial software, and others.

oh yeah, my favorite is porn stored on people's work computers.

Yeah, this situation stinks!

Thanks for the input everyone :D

I'm so NOT computer savvy, and he sooooo is that I'm sure he could uninstall the thing anytime he wanted and temporarily do whatever he wanted.

So what would load on there and not slow things down?

Doesn't something like rootkit slow your computer to a snail's pace because it works inside of windows???

That's what he can't have because of his kind of work.

Oh, and by the way, he works from home, so anytime I'm gone he can pretty much do anything he wants to.

In our past he's chatted with girls because "he was bored"

and downloaded porn.

The porn thing I guess I wouldn't mind so much if I was satisfied with our sex life....but he leaves a lot to be desired.

He never initiates it, and doesn't seem to enjoy "regular old sex" with his wife. Regardless of what I try he still does not seem interested.

Once I found out he was looking at porn one day I was out because when I came home he practically attacked me and made me go on my knees, if you know what I mean.

Now normally, I'd LOVE that, and have nooooo problem doing fun stuff, but that was sooo out of the ordinary, so unlike him, so I asked him if he had been watching it.

And to my surprise he said yes.

Now this was when I was preggo and couldn't get it enough. He was literally pushing me away a lot of the time!!! LOL!!
