ManWithQuestions Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 ok well if you have read my other, long post, you know that i am interested in someone there is another person who is actually interested in me, but theres a slight problem problem 1. she is one of my best friends sister, so i find that kind of awkward 2. she is only 16, turns 17 in november i believe. i am 18, so a legal standpoint comes in. but ive also heard if your 16, you have a 24 month grace period of legality for other people. i really dont believe it, but ive heard it 3. it doesnt really seem like we have a lot in common, but in some aspects we do good things 1. she has never had a boyfriend, as i have never really had a girlfriend 2. she is really optimistic, shes really never angry or mad 3. ive talked to her for hours before, just about the most random crap. i usually cant do that with most girls on another note, if you read my other post, after that whole incident, how much i like her has fallen quite a bit. just showed me a few new things about her but this other girl, the 16 year old, has told me she likes me but because of the reasons above, i have not pursued it what do you guys think about it? EDIT: another reason i havnt done much about it is because she moved with her mom to new mexico for a little bit. they should be back in a few months, but i have known her for a while before that and we have hung out quite a bit (usually since im with her brother)
Jilly Bean Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I think you should stop trying to date teenagers, and go for women you're own age, rather than girls who pose legal issues.
Art_Critic Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Dude.. while you might not think there is much difference between 16 and 18, the law does. It is also a bit creepy because a girl of 16 is just too young for an adult male to date. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America I see legal issues all over the place..
Author ManWithQuestions Posted August 7, 2008 Author Posted August 7, 2008 not till march thats what i was afraid of, the legal stand point guess thats said and done with lol
Art_Critic Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Lookup your state from the link I posted in the previous post.. it should tell you what laws your state has concerning this..
Author ManWithQuestions Posted August 7, 2008 Author Posted August 7, 2008 I think you should stop trying to date teenagers, and go for women you're own age, rather than girls who pose legal issues. i have never tried to date a teenager as i said, i have never pursued her you act like i do it all the time...
Author ManWithQuestions Posted August 7, 2008 Author Posted August 7, 2008 Lookup your state from the link I posted in the previous post.. it should tell you what laws your state has concerning this.. thanks for the link just for the record...this is what it says The age of consent in my state is 18. It is however legal for minors aged 16 and 17 to engage in sexual activity with partners less than 10 years older. which would make it legal, right? not saying i want to have sex with her just the idea in general
xpaperxcutx Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Why would you even consider it? Sixteen year old girls are still a bit immature and they're point of views in life are still too childish to be applied to real life. I was 16 two years ago, I know what I'm talking about. You should not consider dating anybody underage, not only will it create legality conflicts but you'll be putting yourself at a strong crossroad if her parents disapprove. Why can't you date someone either your age or older? I understand the temptation of dating someone younger, but it's you're a college student soon enough to find that maybe you'll be more attracted to college girls than high school girls. College and HS are two entirely different worlds and should drama arise you'll feel like you're babysitting your sister.

Trialbyfire Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 You're only two years apart. I wouldn't worry about it since you've already researched the legality of it. When I was in highschool, my friends and I primarily dated college guys.

It really depends on the maturity level of the individuals involved, as xpapercutz previously mentioned.

(no offense OP). I would see a problem if say you were 22 trying to date a 16 year old...but 18??? Im not trying to make you sound like a baby...im just saying that you're not the monster/molester that comment above made it sound like...

Im not trying to make you sound like a baby...im just saying that you're not the monster/molester that comment above made it sound like... He is an adult male dude.. she is a minor... When I was age 18 I was registered for the draft.. as an adult.. Maybe if you had a 16 year old daughter you might feel differently Look at the age of consent link.. in some states he would be committing statutory rape if an 18 year male old has sex with a 16 year old female. The law in those states also finds it creepy.. and jailable.. I know in reality if no sex happens then it isn't totally inappropriate providing proper boundaries are put in place for the child.. ie: curfew..but if they had sex I would no longer consider it appropiate and consider it creepy.
The Collector Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Practically all 16 year old girls date 18 year olds if they can get them. They sure as hell aren't interested in most boys their own age. Of course when they get older they endlessly bitch about men dating women younger than them.

Some of us continue to date older men due to stage in life and mutual interests. I want a man who can teach me something or be my equal.

It's nothing to be excited about, since most older guys are only after sex.
Author ManWithQuestions Posted August 7, 2008 Author Posted August 7, 2008 I'm not, but yes most guys are

JohnnyBlaze Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I don't know why the world loves to bust balls over this. It's not as though you're a 50 year old guy hanging out on the high school football field during cheerleader practice. By your own admission, you're not even two years older than her (as she's about to turn 17). Assuming the wiki article is correct, you're covered under the R & J law, so you're safe from a legal standpoint. There is a difference in maturity, but it's so minimal that it's not even worth being concerned about. A lot of people have dated someone two years their senior/junior in high school. Dating a 16 year old sounds dirty to someone in their 40's, but to an 18 year old, it's nothing. It's the same age group you'd be hanging out with anyway. So really, where's the problem? Well, okay. There is ONE problem. She's your best friend's sister. My recommendation is that you talk to your friend before anything happens with the girl. You don't want him to find out the hard way. If he did, you'd quite possibly lose your best friend, and due to pressure from her family, the girl as well.

jj2007 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 As long as it's legal, the age thing shouldn't be an issue. But, one thing to think about is if things end up going sour with her, not only could you lose a best friend, but big brother might come and open a can of whoop a$$ on you. Good luck!
xpaperxcutx Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Couldn't get a cool older guy bf when you were 16, huh? I wasn't all that worried about boys when I was 16, I had better things to worry about, such as getting into a good college... my best friend, her brother, has actually been telling me to take her on a date or something sometime. he, and her parents, are ok with it, and he is actually enforcing it lol. idk, its just the fact of if we did go out or something....and we were around him...i think it would just be weird Then don't date her. If things dont go out well, then you'll be ostracized by everyone.
The Collector Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 I wasn't all that worried about boys when I was 16, I had better things to worry about, such as getting into a good college... Well I can see how the two things are mutually exclusive... I'm just yanking your chain. I'm sure you blossomed.
