superm0nkey Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Freedom came at 8:27 am on a Monday morning without fanfare or ceremony. The man stood barefoot on the cold carpet, and rubbed at his eyes as he read the words on the screen of his laptop computer: Her father was sick and her family needed her... she was sorry but she couldn't meet him to say goodbye before he left; There was no time. He sat down roughly at his desk and began to type. As he did, he wondered if the words were really his own, or if he was simply producing a facsimile of what people politely said to one another in these situations. They seemed right... he was sorry to hear the news. His thoughts were with her family. He wished her luck. The man sat for a long moment staring at the last words he would say to her: "Keep your chin up, Shorty." Five simple words that fitted neatly into the lock that had held his heart, and as he sat and stared, the chains that had bound it fell away. Tomorrow he would wake up for the first time in as long as he could remember, and not wonder what those words would be. He would not practice conversations in his head. He would no longer wonder what she was doing or where she was. The last thing he thought as he walked out the door that morning, was that it seemed a quiet and unexceptional end to a journey he had been forced to begin with the loss of someone he had loved so much. The door slammed behind him and his heavy footfalls echoed from the staircase leading to the street below. His apartment sighed as the noise faded; the words hanging in the empty air for a moment. Then... they too were gone. ================================================ Thanks to everyone here who offered their advice and support, you helped more than you know. You guys rock.
