I have a quick question about online dating etiquette.

I have a profile online and have been getting pretty brisk traffic, resulting in multiple e-mails a day. Most of these e-mails are from guys who aren't really what I'm looking for (too old, has kids, can't spell, etc.) and I've been ignoring them.

I have yet to decide if ignoring is better than sending a quick "Thanks, but I'm not interested" e-mail. On one level, I would appreciate a response if I were the sender; however I'm never insulted by a lack of response - I certainly don't take it personally if someone isn't into me based on a photo and a few paragraphs.

What do others do?

I say thanks but no thanks. That is just me though I like to have an idea of what is going on.

It depends on the poster. In rare cases, I'd give a quick, kind and polite "thanks, but I can't" if he seemed like a decent sort AND expressed kindness in his post to me. But in most cases, I ignored them.

When I first started the online dating profile thing, I was like you - I thought it would be nice to reply to everyone who responded, whether it was a "yes" or a "no." How wrong I was!!! I was harassed from men who either wouldn't take No for an answer, or who asked me the reason why I said No and then got nasty with me for it.

IMO, when in doubt, don't reply at all!!!

(In the interest of full disclosure:D, I don't do online dating anymore. It has never panned out for me, or for my GF's who have tried it. Face-to-face encounters, either by chance, at work, or thru friends have always worked the best for us.)
