elecam Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Why do sappy love movies like Definitely, Maybe make me want to hang myself from the nearest elevated object?
carhill Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Poor grasp of the concept of willful suspension of disbelief, perhaps? My personal sample is exceedingly small (wife, past GF's and female friends), but IME women who hate romantic movies have had lousy childhoods and commensurately lousy experiences with love relationships as adults. I've had the latter (lousy adult love relationships) but had a great and loving childhood. I love romantic movies of all sorts, chick flicks included, and I'm a guy In another genre, as an example, my wife has always hated "War of the Roses", where I can watch it over and over, and did for many years when single. Even with marital issues and the D word being talked about, I can still flip it on and roar with laughter watching Michael Douglas pissing on the fish, amongst other bonehead humorous stunts. That's perspective. The movie is a comedy and, like most movies, is fantasy. It's not real life, rather escape. The romances are the same...

OP i can totally understand where your coming from, everytime i look at the notebook i wish it was me.. lol i wish my bf was more like that guy.. but then i snap back to reality and know he will never be like THAT guy.. he has his rare moments.. romantic movies can definitely get to you..
Angel1111 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Why do sappy love movies like Definitely, Maybe make me want to hang myself from the nearest elevated object? Make you want to hang yourself in what sense - that these movies make you so sad you want to end it all, or because you can't stand sappy movies?
Lyssa Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I enjoyed watching Definitely, Maybe. It was so suh-weet!
Ssheena Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Cynical, bitter, and convinced nothing like that is ever, ever going to happen to me. My friend thought I hated the Sex in the City movie, but it actually just made me really sad. I avoid them at all costs.
