iwanttolive Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Hi guys.. just wondering, after being married for a while and seeing each other day after day, do u run out of things to talk about with ur partner? I'm not married yet, just dating.. Yet, we are already caught in the awkward silence once in a while. It's so not healthy.. Yet, i don't know if i should get out of the r/s.. Thanks much..
Trialbyfire Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 It's okay to have comfortable silence! If you're having awkward silences, are your interests so diversified? Maybe it's time to find a hobby that both of you enjoy, so you've got more in common.
Nemo Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Every time you have one of those awkward silences, plug the gap with some sex. Chances are that you'll both be making some noises in no time.
motive2002 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Thank God for television. Ok maybe you aren't a couch potato, but if you can find shows you both like to watch together, that gives you something to talk about, or at the very least gets you past the awkward silence thing. That's one thing I really hate about computers. They are really made for one user, unless you have two of them hooked up side by side or something. Even then it's not as interactive for more than one person. Then, of course, there's all kinds of activities if you're not a couch potato. Doing things together creates a bond, and a by product is having things to talk about afterwards. Going on hikes, joining a book club, playing tennis, going bowling.. it doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive. The trick is getting your partner off the couch and trying new things. Most people feel rewarded for trying something new. Explore things together and get lots of pictures along the way. That's lots of cool things to reminisce about later on
Author iwanttolive Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Ok.. I think now I know what our problem is.. He's a real estate agent, i'm a full time office worker. When i'm off work, in the evening and on weekends, it's his time to work. All those house viewing take place in the evening and on weekends. We hardly spend quality time together anymore. At most, we squeeze in time to have dinner together.. Also, he's new in this line.. So he's stressed and irritable all the time. That hinders us from having a healthy communication. He'll be picking on me all the time, intolerant of little mistakes that I make. Basically he wants everything to fall into place and i'm expected to know what to do. And when i'm being provoked, I keep to myself even more. I wanted to post a new thread earlier. We can give our best, give our 200% and be the model partner that everyone envies. All it takes is ONE party in the relationship to give up trying, and the relationship will just go down the drain!
Curmudgeon Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 It's okay to have comfortable silence! If you're having awkward silences, are your interests so diversified? Maybe it's time to find a hobby that both of you enjoy, so you've got more in common. My wife and I have been married for going on 12 years, friends for almost 17. We haven't run out of conversation topics yet. But sometimes we simply don't want to talk and we can communicate just fine in silence. Silence can, after all, be eloquent.
motive2002 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 If you're dating, are you going out on dates? Do you live together? So often I see couples fall into this routine of coexisting that tantamounts to sheer boredom. Set up dates! Maybe once a week, maybe more. Go out and do stuff together as a couple. I know married couples that date one another. Going out on a date is fun! You don't have to stop doing it, even if you are married. Plus you already know you're date is coming home with you It's a special, set aside time where you get dressed up (or dressed down depending on what you're doing) and enjoy spending time together. My friends have an old fashioned teardrop trailer. Some weekends they get someone to watch the kids and they take off camping just the two of them! Just some ideas... thinking out loud as usual.

Unless you sit home all day and do absolutely nothing, there is always something to talk about.
