my body is a cage Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I just turned 19, and I know basically all of you on here are my age or older, but I feel old old old old. However, even though I feel like my childhood is officially over, I still find myself in countless awkward situations. My question is: Does awkwardness go away when you get older? Do some people never grow out of it? When do they usually grow out of it??
carhill Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 With experience comes confidence. That takes time. The more you experience, the greater the body of tools and skills and abilities you have to cope with new situations. I don't think awkwardness goes away completely, but it does largely diminish. For me, it took getting married and having a life-altering event (my mom getting dementia) to "cure" me. Very little phases me anymore, not to be confused with irritates me
whichwayisup Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I don't think awkwardness goes away completely I agree. I think eventually ya just stop caring about it and accept it. Carhill is right. As you get older, the more you experience and learn, you'll become more secure and things will just fall into place.
carhill Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Oh, also, OP, I'm pretty sure what you're feeling isn't "old". BTDT, got a generation and a half on you and I still don't feel old unless I look in the mirror Old=done, and, trust me, you're not done
xpaperxcutx Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 akwardness for me comes and goes... but I make an effort to deal with it. I used to be really shy, and I had always tried to avoid situations where I might have confrontations. But eventually I realized that I have to learn to speak my mind or else I'll always get trampled on. So now I hardly ever get shy unless I have a one on one date with a guy I like.
