redfathom Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Every June we get our annual reviews. Last year I had only been here seven months so I got an $800 annual increase. They took into account what I would have gotten minus the months I was not here. So I guess I would have gotten $1600, or 4% increase, $.75 an hour, but in reality I got $.38 an hour increase last June. This year I am doing my assistant's review, she scored a 3, which is average. My boss told me on Monday to make sure I really lay into her on issues because she has not been doing that great of a job and they gave her a really big increase. I just found out her increase amount is $1.50 an hour. That is a 10% raise, even though she has only been here since late February. My boss made a point of telling me that her increase was so much because they wanted to bring her pay up to industry standards!!! She now makes $16.00 an hour and her job is basically a receptionist and to help me when I need help. I only make $19.60 an hour, that was with my raise last year. Our recruiter told me not to expect more then a 4% raise this year, which would be less then $.78 an hour, MAX (meaning most people are getting around 3%), even though I have been here a full year since our last review. Industry standards for me (Executive Assistant to CEO and COO) is around $45,000+. I know I should be happy with any raise, but I bust my butt so this really does not seem fair. This is all assumption, because I don't know what I am actually getting. If this is the case, I will be extreamly pissed off.
Kamille Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 I just had to negotiate my salary and I took a big slap. One thing I can tell you though: Don't compare apples with oranges. Your salary and that of your assistant are likely two entire different things, and even though you may feel it is unfair, it is no platform to argue for a pay raise. What you should be focusing on is communicating what raise you think is fair for YOUR job in YOUR field and prepare arguments on that basis for your boss. Industry standards: good; what you bring to the company: good; comparing your salary to your assistant's: bad.
Author redfathom Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 I have no plans of negotiating my raise as of yet, I still need to find out what it is. Which I will find out on Monday, when we get paid. My acutal review will be mid July. As for everything else, I bring a heck of a lot more to the company then my assistant. I do twice the work in addition to having to follow up with her on tasks she is given. This was all stated in her review. When I applied for the job, the pay raise was between $40K and $45K, I was given the $40K amount. I have eight years of administrative experience. I do a great job and deserve a large pay raise.
Author redfathom Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 So I found out my pay raise is $.86. So I am very dissappointed that some one here for just over four months and my subordinate would get almost twice as much as me. This other girl who has been here just eight months got 2%. Our COO decides what everyones raise is and her direct boss is our CFO. He told her he was putting off giving her raise because he was embarrassed at how little it was. This is all very sad and dissappointing.
Gold Pile Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Employers hate losing decent (didn't say great) help..it means training time was a waste and they have to start over with a new hire. Often new hires want more money too. It's easy to lose a $16 employee to another employer, so the incentive is to raise their pay to the going rate. Don't base much of your case for your own raise on that one assistant. Tell them everything you do for them and plan to do for them in the future. It never hurts spread word that another company is making you an offer. Some bosses like to generate friction between the workers (keeps them from uniting against him/her). Such a boss will gladly tell your assistant that you were trashing her. The old rules of loyalty between employers and employees went out the window in the 80's. You need to be a free agent now, if company B will pay you more than company A.... go for it.

If I were your boss I'd try not to give you a raise because you sound like a bad person and you look down on your assistant and are jealous she got a raise. You probably don't even do much more than she does and she probably deserves extra money for putting up with you. That raise might have meant a lot more to her than you think. Selfishness and jealously are never qualities people try to reward. Must be so hard for you girls to make coffee and try to look pretty. Must be a hard life.
