sunshinegirl Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I had a work dinner tonight where people brought their spouses. Wine flowed, food flowed, conversation went way off into the weeds (as tends to happen with my very non-politically correct partners). One partner decided to put the girlfriend of another partner on the spot, asking her to describe me in three adjectives. She and I have met before, just once. She's a lovely woman; her relationship with our other partner is a really inspiring story of people finding real love at 50 after broken marriages on both sides. But, like I said, we've met only once before. Anyway, she decides to play along. She looks at me, with this kindness in her eye, and she says: SSG is luminous...she's got a good heart...and she's loyal. It felt a bit like getting my fortune read by a stranger, but I can't tell you how nice it was to hear. She even repeated it later, and I got all embarrassed about it, and she said "no really - you ARE luminous. Can't you see it?" It was so sweet. And in the back of my mind, I was thinking about my non-communicative, non-emotional, antisocial (lying, cheating) ex. Whom I loved anyway. He threw away LUMINOSITY - what was he thinking? (Think the office hooch is luminous?)
carrotgirl Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Methinks SSG is shiny! And could be partner's GF thinks you're hawt! Carrot
johan Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I've gotten that before. "Johan? Johan is such a loooooo.... mmmminous! He's so luminous! Yeah! That's it!"
Author sunshinegirl Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 Sunshine is by definition luminous. Nice. Mmm, yes, there is that. To state the obvious. Well I am going to milk this thing for all it's worth. It does seem strange to me, and strangely validating, that a near-stranger can see qualities in me that my ex never saw or appreciated. And actually the comment heals a way way way old hurt: my first boyfriend, years ago, told me he was dumping me because I didn't "light up a room" when I walked in and he wanted to be with a woman who lit up the room. It turned out, however, that he didn't want a luminous woman after all: he actually wanted a man.

bayouboi Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Well, that beats my work's dinner party. I had a guy ask me if I was going to become a monk now that my wife left me.
Trialbyfire Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 He threw away LUMINOSITY - what was he thinking? I would say he's not the brightest spark in the pile!

Thanks. My wattage is dim this morning, though. I ate when the highs and moments of strength are immediately thwarted with the "boo hoo's".
