I hear a lot of people say that if you are sexually active you should get tested regularly for STD's, which I agree with completely. My question is what is the best way and how it is done. Specifically, for those that do get tested on a regular basis:

1) Where exactly do you go to get tested?

2) What kind of test or tests do you ask for? And are there different ones?

3) How much does it cost (estimate) if you are not currently covered by insurance?

4) How often do you get tested?

Hey there,

In answer to your question

1: It depends. For a female you will lay on the pallet and the nurse or doctor will use a speculum (which is a metal or plastic instrument that holds open the vagina) so they can look inside of the vagina for genital warts. They will then grab a few swaps and rub against the cervix walls. This will look for gonherra, chylmida, gental warts or bacteria.

They will also take a bloodtest to see if there is herpes, hepitatis, HIV or AIDS. This can also be done for a male with the nurse/doctor looking over the penis to make sure they don't have symptoms of an STD.

2: You can ask for a full over std test. :) There is no seperate ones.

3: It depends on where you live, if in Australia medicare will cover the costs, in Britian the NHS will cover the cost. In America I am not sure. Although I do presume that it can be a free service.

4: It is recommended that if you have one partner you need to be tested every 6 months. However if you have multiple partners (Such as adult stars in adult movies) you have to be tested anywhere from two weeks to a month.

1) Where exactly do you go to get tested?

All states have public health departments, which offer STD testing.

2) What kind of test or tests do you ask for? And are there different ones?

Yes, there are many different STD's they can test for. You will meet with a counselor who will discuss your sexual history and most likely, they will test you for EVERYTHING.

3) How much does it cost (estimate) if you are not currently covered by insurance?

As above - free!

4) How often do you get tested?

I get tested every annual physical AND when I end a relationship.

1) Where exactly do you go to get tested?

I've been to the sex clinic a few years.. then the last time it was at my physician.

Yes, there are different ones.. I asked for ALL of them (some are blood tests, some are urine tests).

3) How much does it cost (estimate) if you are not currently covered by insurance?

My insurance covers everything.

4) How often do you get tested?

Annually... but if I have sex and the condom breaks (happened last Jan. on my vacation down south).. then I get checked again.
