Nemo Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 A person in their twenties is perfectly capable of changing their habits, but they have to be willing and ready to do so. They have to take it seriously. Dude, we're talking about people barely into their twenties. Now is the time to be cutting loose, and sucking the marrow from life. It's the time to experiment, and push things to the limit. There's no other time that's more perfect for getting hammered every night, and loving every minute of it. It's a rite of passage, and if they don't take full advantage of this time (and free booze), then they will regret it for the rest of their lives!!

Spookie is 22 and has already graduated from college. I don't think that's too young to curtail her habits. She is just starting her career, and this is the perfect time for her to make those changes. I think the budding alcoholics can get lost among the sea of social drinkers, so often they don't get the help they need early on.
Art_Critic Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 then they will regret it for the rest of their lives!! How can someone regret something like that ?.. You don't look back as an adult and regret not drinking more.. or getting drunker longer.. It also isn't as if Spookie hasn't spent the most of the last 2 or so years wasted already.... So she hasn't missed out on anything...

Nemo and I have both spent our younger years getting wasted and having fun, and know that you eventually come out the other side a more experienced and open minded person. I spent ages 20 to 25 in a blur of alcohol and drugs every weekend and I still managed to excel in my studies and career. I still party but no longer as hard, I simply no longer have the desire. This too will eventually happen to spookie, it'll just wear thin after awhile. On the other hand, BO and Art are alcoholics who weren't able to come out that other side as easily, so they cannot comprehend someone getting trashed for fun. Look at the issues BO is currently having with her SO. Shadow has no experience with this either, from her own admission. My friends and I had the best time ever partying in our early twenties and I wouldn't want spookie to miss out on a second of all the fun we had.

I think you are fighting a drinking problem as we speak yourself... In a sense that is the blind leading the blind... You have someone who has a drinking problem telling someone else they don't have one because they themselves don't want to look in mirror and admit that they have a problem to themselves.
johan Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I think the guy has serious problems with alcohol. His approach to drinking is not a healthy one. Spookie is not much better off as far as alcohol goes.
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Exactly. I'm so relieved that wisdom has descended on this thread. We have truly been graced with a profound sense of perspective, and we should sit back and soak it all up. Simply brilliant. It would be a great shame to see some on this forum succeed in trying to deprive spookie of one of the most exciting and exhilarating experiences that life has to offer us. A time of pushing your body to the limit, because you will never again feel so invulnerable. And truly free, and uninhibited. It's a time to bathe in the aura of life itself. To dance in the shadow of evil, yet never get corrupted. It's a time to learn more about oneself than ever before. A time that's critical to finding one's path to a truly happy future. What getting wasted and having fun lacks in meaning, it more than makes up for in adrenaline rush. Well, the bit that you can remember, anyway.

Calisto Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I only drink a glass or two of red wine because it is the healthiest of the alcohols and doesn't make you fat. Alcohol is very caloric and fattening. Lots of young people in college and in their twenties gain weight because they are drinking and partying all the time. I so go out with friends all the time, but I just drink a glass of red wine, then club soda with a twist the rest of the night. Believe me, not having a belly and being fit and thin is a much more fun way to spend your 20s than drinking all the time and moving up a size or two or three in jeans. More food for thought!
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Are you high right now? Dude, I am soooo wasted!! I am high as a kite. Who let go of the string??!!
D-Lish Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I have spiralled into being an alcoholic this past year. I drink pretty much every day, either alone or with friends. Often to the point of waking up and not remembering what I did the night before. I scare myself sometimes. Sometimes I hit the point where I become angry D, or "evil D" as my friends call me when I hit that point. I am a functioning alcoholic- meaning, I drink all the time yet still complete my day to day activities and no one knows how much I actually drink. If you drink everyday, especially to the point of getting buzzed- that makes you an alcoholic. If he drinks and gets angry... it's a pretty big red flag. I know so because I am that person.
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Often to the point of waking up and not remembering what I did the night before. I scare myself sometimes. Is it the sight of your bedhead?
D-Lish Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Is it the sight of your bedhead? I think it's more about my breath. Even my dogs refuse to kiss me in the morning.
Prodigal Princess Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 There is no one true test for alcoholism. One person may lose it after one drink, while another can binge regularly and it's not a problem. For example, many of my friends have the same drinking habits as D-Lish, but don't perceive themselves as alcoholics. It is really up to the individual to decide whether or not they are taking things too far. I think labelling spookie and TT alcoholics is misguided and unhelpful. Spookie may be making mistakes right now (and having fun while doing so!), but that's the only way she will learn. You can't put a wise head on young shoulders.
Calisto Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I don't see how getting to the point of throwing up and then going back for more the next night is having fun. I am 40 and can count 3 times in my life I have been drunk enough to puke. Being drunk is not fun! I am tired and sluggish, as well as have a headache for much of the next day. I don't get drinking's appeal. I hosted a bachelorette party a couple months ago and got so drunk that I could barely remember it. The rest of the women had a great time! At least I saw the pictures - man it was wild and crazy, but I missed most of it! AND the next day I felt like crap. That was one of 3 times in my life I was totally drunk. I seriously don't get the appeal!
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 There is no one true test for alcoholism. One person may lose it after one drink, while another can binge regularly and it's not a problem. Agreed. Too much generalisation going on in this thread, for sure. It is really up to the individual to decide whether or not they are taking things too far. I think labelling spookie and TT alcoholics is misguided and unhelpful.True. Again, people are jumping to conclusions. Spookie may be making mistakes right now (and having fun while doing so!), but that's the only way she will learn. You can't put a wise head on young shoulders.Any good parent will tell you that some things can only be learned through experience, and this is one such example.
johan Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I hosted a bachelorette party a couple months ago and got so drunk that I could barely remember it. Makes you wish your liver could talk, doesn't it.
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I hosted a bachelorette party a couple months ago and got so drunk that I could barely remember it. The rest of the women had a great time! The rest of the women wouldn't have had such a wicked time if you hadn't been sh*t-faced. Don't you realise how much you have enriched their lives?! Props to you!!
Storyrider Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Nemo and I have both spent our younger years getting wasted So you knew him back when he was a hippie punk-rocker? What was he like? It is really up to the individual to decide whether or not they are taking things too far. I think labelling spookie and TT alcoholics is misguided and unhelpful. Spookie has posted repeatedly over the past twelve months that she has a drinking problem.
Trialbyfire Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 spookie is into the hard stuff, with cocaine and alcohol, the first, highly addictive, the second, potentially highly addictive. Yes, I partied pretty hard as a teenager and even into Uni, but after awhile, you get sick of it. By the time I hit my first job, it was long over. spook lacks impulse control. It's time to learn some self-discipline, if she wants to get beyond being an intern and seriously apply herself towards being upwardly mobile. This guy is a mean and paranoid drunk. I would be cautious with this guy.
Nemo Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Spookie has posted repeatedly over the past twelve months that she has a drinking problem. Unfortunately the LS "do gooders" are getting to her. They have fooled her into thinking that she has a problem, when it's simply normal for her age. Yes, I partied pretty hard as a teenager and even into Uni, but after awhile, you get sick of it. Exactly. It's perfectly normal, and most people are overreacting.
Prodigal Princess Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Spookie has posted repeatedly over the past twelve months that she has a drinking problem. If she was serious, she would have made some effort to stop drinking by now. Anyone who has ever woken up with a hangover has told themselves that they have a problem! Spookie also said, earlier in this thread: I don't think anyone who drinks, even to the point of excess, is automatically a terminal alcoholic. Some people go through periods in their lives when they do this kind of thing and then, for one reason or another, change their lifestyles. I like to think that I will be one of them. I think she is one of them. I also agree with TBF.
Calisto Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 The rest of the women wouldn't have had such a wicked time if you hadn't been sh*t-faced. Don't you realise how much you have enriched their lives?! Props to you!! Yes it did help me in the social department. I am the "newby" at work and by throwing this awesome party, I got a lot of attention and I am the "cool" coworker now. These women are still talking about this party! So even though I don't remember much of it, it still gained me popularity at work.

Just don't listen to the scaremongering people who are jealous of your burgeoning status.
Calisto Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Spookie, now if you start drinking alone alot, then I would start worrying.
