I'm new to America, and feel quite lonely sometimes. I heard many people say church is a good place for meeting people. But I'm not religious, I'm atheist. Am I going to meet any people like me in the church?

Probably not, or none that are willing to admit it anyway.

There are many other places to meet people besides church.

Hang out with people at your job?

Join a club.

There are tons of clubs out there like chess, walking, books, sports etc.. I'd be very careful about joining a church when you're lonely and vulnerable, that's when you're the easiest to brainwash.

If you have to compromise your beliefs in just to meet new people, then the answer is no to joining church.

If you're an atheist, I'd recommend NOT joining a church. If you do meet someone at a church, the instant they discover that you're not religious, they'll blackball you. Now you're back where you started, but you wasted a lot of time doing it. And sooner or later, things like this always come up - you can only hide it for so long.

Depending where you're from, there may be a community center in your town/city. Example: if you're Asian, then go to Chinatown and you'll probably find some form of community center. Of course, if you're Irish/Scottish/British like many of us, your community center is called a pub! :D

Like Enema said, you can always join a club. There are clubs for everything out there nowadays, from astronomy to zoology. Find a club that does something you'll like. The benefit is not only that you'll get out of the house, but you'll know from the start that anyone you meet there already has at least one common interest.

Another idea for you is volunteering for a worthy cause. You will keep busy and meet many wonderful people.

I recommend that you visit the largest Baptist church in town. That's always an excellent suggestion if you want to meet girls. You don't have to be a Christian to visit a Baptist church: all people are welcome, atheists included.

The procedure is to show up at the visitor's center at the largest Baptist church you can find. It should be just inside the main entrance. Go up to the visitor's desk, introduce yourself, and ask to be shown to a class. They'll escort you to a singles class where you'll probably be warmly welcomed. They'll also answer--politely--any questions you may have about God or Christianity. (You may also find answers to your questions at ChristianAnswers dot net.)

Jesus was criticized for eating and drinking with sinners, and His response was, "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Mark 2:17).

You will notice something different about Christians: they seem possessed of a different Spirit than the world has. It's almost as if Someone else is living inside of them, speaking through them, living through them. Go to church, and meet this God of the Christians. He is calling you there, and wants to have a relationship with you, which is more important than that with a girl.

Brightkelly - this is the reason you should not join a church. You'll only meet wackos like this.

lol ok I'll try not to piss anybody off. I always find religious people generally quite nice and polite:p, but i find it hard to believe they believe in these things.

BK, getting involved – whether it's in a church community or through volunteering someplace you find interesting – is a great way to get settled into a community.

as far as church goes, check the local paper to see if any of them offer singles ministries or mom's ministries (if you're either of those), or if they have adult faith education classes. Even if you're a die-hard atheist, you may enjoy learning something about different religious beliefs at these classes – I know the Catholic Church has something called an RCIA program, which is a great way to learn AND to meet people. You aren't necessarily "recruited" to join that church, just learn about the faith.
