ARDriver01 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 My girlfriend and some of her friends were making plans over dinner last night to go out to Sunset Blvd and hop. I let them talk amongst themselves and I guess I'm going too. They're all from out of the area and it's going to be a first for all of them. I suggested that I drove the bus so-to-speak, so that they don't end up getting screwed financially and standing in lines all night. They thought that was a good idea. So... My girlfriend, we'll call her D, has a bunch of guy friends. They're all really good friends of hers from way, way back and some new ones. On the other hand, she has about the same number of girlfriends. This is totally cool and for the first time in my young life I don't feel insecure about this because she was there when my XW was constantly fooling around. She also knows what it's like to be betrayed and thank God, she's not that kind of girl at all. The only thing I worry about a little, is that one of her guy friends will say to me "Hey man, you better take good care of her, she's a great girl man, don't hurt her" etc...etc... The last guy that said that to me when I was married got layed out and then thrown out of our bar. Come on man, I know what that means... That's one thing that really, really pisses me off. Hey, maybe it won't even happen this time or ever but I truly doubt it. It happens all the time. I've done this before and I do anticipate it eventually, be it tonight or whenever. It always happens and I always end up doing the whole "Hey, uh, can I talk to you for a minute?" thing. So, just to be safe... If one of her friends does say those dooming words, how should I react? I mean really? I shouldn't let it piss me off right? I trust her fully but that's not the point. When a dude says that (usually after a few drinks and you both think you're on your way being good friends) I get very, very offended. It's really rude, insulting, childish, inapropriate and revealing of thier true intentions. Should I just laugh it off?
Shin0bi1 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I told my sister's husband, when they were first dating, this speech and that I would end his life if he hurts my lil' sis. Then cracked my knuckles for added affect with a crazed look in my eye. It's my rights as her big brother to warn guys that she is dating to keep in mind of consequences for their actions. We look back and laughed about it now because I looked pretty serious when I said it lol. I'm really a nice guy, just a lil' overprotective. -Shin0bi1

However, I'm talking about friends.
quankanne Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 more than likely, they've known D a good while and are overprotective of their friend. As annoying as it is for you (and possibly her!), it's good to know she's got people who care that much about her. So don't look at it as a challenge, but as a compliment to your lady-friend. the next time you hear that, look the speaker straight in the eye and tell him that you appreciate his concern, and that you're glad she's got friends who care enough to protect her this way. Then let it go.
Author ARDriver01 Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 That's very good. I will do that. Thank you.

Hmm...just be careful here. She could be a little crazy. I've dated some mentally unstable people (who seemed normal at first) and in both cases the friends warned me ahead of time to "take care" of her. What they were trying to determine is whether I would hurt her and send her off the deep end. When this happens, it may be nothing but it could be a red flag. I would look for other signs in her personality. Like is she really needy, etc.?
