motive2002 Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Nothing works quite like it. If someone could bottle it and sell it, they'd be millionaires! I don't have a scale at home, so I never really pay much attention to my weight (although I should) I was visiting her mom and getting to meet her extended family for the first time. When I used her bathroom at her mom's house, she had one of those digital scales.. so I thought I'd weigh myself. Fast forward to about 4 weeks after that when I weighed in at the doctor's office... I'm down 20 lbs! 20 friggin pounds!! I look at my physique and kinda wonder where it went. The "love handles" seemed to have disappeared for the most part, but I'm still kinda filled out from before I put the weight on years ago. I never have been a really big guy or anything, but yenno, got into my 30's, metabolism slowed, my job was less active. I was less active.. etc. Anyone else drop a bunch of weight since the break-up? I don't really feel that much lighter, but the scale says otherwise.
Nevermind Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I lost 10 pounds in two weeks, but I had put on 8 before that (emotional eating). The weight fluctuates easily with me, so I am thinking it is just water. But I am watching what I am eating now. All part of the plan to become the best possible me I can, to prove him wrong. 20 pounds is amazing! Congratulations! Are you working out?
Author motive2002 Posted June 1, 2008 Author Posted June 1, 2008 The only real changes are that I'm eating less, and doing more physical work at my job. I haven't started a work out regimen or anything. The first few weeks were brutal. It was difficult to eat anything at all. My appetite nearly disappeared.
Nevermind Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Maybe you eat smaller portions as well, once the appetite comes again it's the best time to change your eating habits, because you won't devour large quantities of food (usually). Keep it up! It's summer, you look like David Wenham, you're slim and trim. Perfect!

When I break up or have no love, seems like all that I can do is eat. I never understood how come when people are sad, they just can't eat. If I'm sad, I feel better with a hot fudge sundae. Oh yeah, and it doesn't help that I'm never happy in love. Love was not meant for me.

sunshinegirl Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I've lost 15 pounds. Yesterday was the first day I had two full meals (it's been a month since the breakup). What I hate is that I have no energy which means all that good exercise that one should do to feel better is nigh well impossible. Can't do it on 400 calories a day!
madgun68 Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Anyone else drop a bunch of weight since the break-up? I don't really feel that much lighter, but the scale says otherwise. I did.. But I think it was just all the stress. My eating habits hadn't changed. Crappy weight loss system.. but it works.
Lookingforward Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 when I'm truly miserable I can't eat...not don't but honestly CAN'T.... I pretty much OD on coffee (and cigs when I used to) I always lose weight after a breakup
ioncebelieved Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I guess the exact opposite diet would be the "seafood" diet! See food and eat all you can!! No doubt, weight watchers, jenny craig has nothing on "she doesn't love me anymore"diet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LikeCharlotte Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I have never lost weight so rapidly. It actually scares me a bit because I try to be healthy. I just keep forgetting to eat. I wonder if lack of appitite is some kind of chemical reaction to withdrawal from oxytocin, vassopressin, serotonin, or endorphine. I should probably look it up. It seems that biologically rejection should have some kind of effect on us physically. Have you ever seen a lone wolf? They look scrawny and I know that its harder for them to hunt but maybe their system shuts down appetite a bit as a defense. Just a theory... any thoughts?
LikeCharlotte Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Also I want to note that a good friend of mine lost 30lbs in a few months after her husband left her for another woman. When I asked her what had happened she told me that she just lost her appetite and is eating smaller portions. Hrm. There must be something to this. Grief? Rejection? I thought of something else. During the most traumatic and painful experience of my life (it lasted quite awhile) I had no appetite at all. This went on for years and I honestly thought I was a person who just didn't like food. i was surprised that when I'd finally healed I loved to eat and had a very healthy appetite.
Trialbyfire Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Wolves hunt as pack animals. A lone wolf can't take down a large animal like a deer, caribou, moose or other natural prey on their own so they're reliant on much smaller animals to feed on. During the winter, smaller animals aren't an abundant source of food.

LC, I know a woman that actually stopped eating after her D, had a total shutdown to the point they hospitalised her..... scary that you can let someone have that much control over your life and well being. Kinda like "suicide by cop", she seemed to have a death wish

I was trying to say that there might be a natural mechanism in the brains of social animals that helps them cope with the harshness of social rejection. Something that maybe suppresses appetite in crisis situations so they can continue to survive on the bear minimum. Wow, I can be vague. Hope that clarifies.

Kinda like "suicide by cop", she seemed to have a death wish In that scenerio I think something else was going on. Sometimes people who don't eat are trying to regain some sort of control after they've experienced something that is beyond their control. Thats just awful. Did she recover? Is she happier now?

Sometimes people who don't eat are trying to regain some sort of control after they've experienced something that is beyond their control. Thats just awful. Did she recover? Is she happier now? She seems happier in some ways and yes she has 'recovered' as far as weight and health, but still trying to hold her exH to ransom if you like, by refusing to get a job now their son has gone off to college. Of course he's aiding and abetting that LOL, just doesn't have what it takes to say enough is enough apart from whine that she SHOULD be looking for a job now. So yes, was a dysfunctional M and now a dysfunctional D

There are more people who over-eat for emotional reasons, than don't. Also, breakup isn't a crisis situation. I do recall losing 10 lbs over the cessation of my marriage, but that was because I fell into a mild state of depression for a short time. Once I realized what an idiot I was being, I increased my exercise program, stimulating my appetite, therefore increasing food intake. I gained back 5 lbs and have remained the same since.
Lookingforward Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Also, breakup isn't a crisis situation. depends on the person maybe
Trialbyfire Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 depends on the person maybe If it's exasperated by other issues or disorders, it might be.
Ariadne Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Also, breakup isn't a crisis situation. depends on the person maybe I'd agree to that. When I was in college, at the time when I actually gave a sht about that stuff.. If I had a big project to do or had to study all night for a final I'd go without eating. I just forgot all about it and it became a nuisance that just took time away.
Lookingforward Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 If it's exasperated by other issues or disorders, it might be. exacerbated ? breakups are by nature exasperating anyway
v33 Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I lost 13lbs in two months. Most of it in the first 5 weeks due to not eating, but then I joined a gym and started running and eat a healthy amount every day again. I have heard that losing weight after a break up is pretty common due to loss of appetite. I was getting concerned but now that I am eating regularly and getting daily exercise I am glad the pounds are gone. People (girls mostly) are commenting on how trim I look these days.
Trialbyfire Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 exacerbated ? breakups are by nature exasperating anyway No, exasperated.
