johan Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 My brother was saying how in Russian tradition, you bring a bottle of vodka to share when meeting people for the first time. Would that be appropriate, or should I leave my culture behind? Take the vodka, and when you toast, remind them that Russian superstition requires you to drink it all before putting the glass down in order to avoid bad luck.
Nemo Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 My brother was saying how in Russian tradition, you bring a bottle of vodka to share when meeting people for the first time. Sounds like a great idea. Also, ask for one week of paid annual leave so that you can go recover your passport personally.
Nevermind Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 For the Russian people I know, it just applies to informal meetings. It won't happen at a business encounter, or at the very least not in the beginning. Wouldn't do it. Besides, if your brother told you this, it's not like you really have a connection to that custom.

Ariadne Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 OK so I'm filling out the paperwork for the job tonight and I come across the employment eligibility verification sheet. Just explain and they'll give you time. Don't worry. Who is going to send you the passport from there?

Order & Chaos Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Okay I seem to be the only HR person on here. I can tell you that my company would give you 24 hours to resolve the situation and if not resolved would not allow you to work until said resolution. You are a worker's compensation liability by not having the I9 done properly as well as a possible INS issue. It is very clear you need a passport or two forms of other id. Period. There are no excuses and if your companies I9's get audited then not only are they are risk but so are you. Just a word of caution, get your situation cleared up and represent to HR even if they didn't notice the issue. I9's are a bigger deal now than ever and it is sad that your HR dept isn't staying on top of things.

Better now than HR to suddenly realise there's an issue
