Oni Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 So I'm finishing my senior year of high school and can't wait to get out of the place. One thing has been seriously bothering me though: Senior Prom. It's a month away, but I love to stress out about these kind of things. I've never been much into dances, to be honest. I mean I've been to a few, but I didn't go to Prom my junior year, only the After-Prom. EVERY adult I've talked to said that Senior Prom is a MUST, though. EVERY kid at school I've talked to says that if there's one thing you should do in high school it's experience that dance. I guess I'm just surprised I haven't encountered more people like me who aren't so into it... What are your thoughts on Prom? Is it really worth it to go?
PinkKittyKat Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Man, I went to Grad(what we call senior prom here) for my grade 10 year with my senior bf. It was incredibly lame and they didn't play any music me and my group liked. It was full of bad buffet food that I got food poisoning from. It was just another high school dance. It was no big deal. So, I decided to skip out on my own grad. I have never regretted it. I went to the after party, and also me and some friends went to our own "grad dinner" at a fancy restaurant. Noone in my group of friends regretted skipping out on something we wouldn't have enjoyed anyway! If it's not your thing, then don't feel pressured to go. You may just end up being miserable.
e.clipse Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 my senior High School English teacher told our class something, a few weeks before the prom, that i still have not forgotten. she said: Everyone makes a big deal out of the senior Prom before it happens, but after it's passed, you'll realize you won't know what the big deal was really about. and it's true. the hype doesn't match the reality of it. i remember i went to my senior prom, even though i was completely not into dances or anything high school related, really. mostly, i ended up going because of pressure from my friends. you know how that is, and so i gave in. i ended up buying a long black dress, which i paid about $500 for. adding to that the cost of the tickets, my hairdo, makeup, and limousine () rental, prom ended up being about 15 hundred dollars. what a waste of money. the food was cheap, the songs were lame absurdities i'd never listen to on my on, and the atmosphere was so bland. it was just terrible. sure, seeing my friends was cool, but not for that amount of money, no, when i can see them any other day for free. looking back, the only good thing about my senior prom was that i went with my then-sweetheart. because it was neither his nor my scene, we escaped to the back garden for a while and went on a little carriage ride. that truly was the highlight of the night, being alone with him in a cute setting. but if i would have known better, i would have ditched the hole thing and spent time with him at his house or something. i would have only needed 15 dollars, and everything else would have been a thousand times more magnificent. so no, prom does not rule. it sucks. it's exaggerated and fails to measure up. if it's not really your thing, chances are this particular branch of the same tree won't be of your liking, either. maybe you'd have a better time rounding up other people who don't want to go, like your friends or something, and doing something different. i'm nearly positive it will be far less expensive and much more memorable.
