How long will it take to get over? And how can I be supportive in the meantime?

I realize that there's no easy answer to this question and that it'll vary for everyone --- but how long, on average, would it take someone to get over their ex after a 6-month relationship?

A friend of mine just got dumped, and I'm wondering first, how long I should reasonably be expecting before they are able to get fully back into dating and stuff, and two, how I can help be supportive, boost their self-esteem (which isn't great on the best of days) and what... well, what NOT to say, mostly. I don't want to get stuck in the unhelpful and insensitive "Oh, well, you know, you'll get over it, so don't be sad now!" rut.

As a friend, my advice is to listen, empathize and offer to share time and activities which you know your friend found fulfilling when they were not grieving the loss of their relationship. Resist giving "advice" unless they ask for it, and don't expect them to follow it.

Recovery time depends on the person and the depth of the emotional bond and who ended the relationship. As a dumpee, it always took me longer to "get over it". I'd be patient for a couple months and see how things go.

Haven't you ever had a breakup in your life to help you answer this question? (If not, you are very lucky!)
