Gold Pile Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Sadly :(I won't have a date this Easter weekend. But I still feel an obligation to get flowers for my elderly Aunt. I humbly hope those of you with dates will find these tips useful. Flower shops cost too much! Yesterday I purchased a cheap floral arrangement at the supermarket. I then "fluffed it up" with some leafy spinach that was on sale. Depending on the time of year and your climate you can often find free flowers/weeds growing at the roadside, parks, or your neighbor's garden. If they don't make an acceptable gift on their own, they can still be used to fill out a cheap supermarket plant. This market's parking lot is often littered with pine cones, a fine fluffer they make. This time of year in Connecticut is slim pickings. I spotted the usual group of overweight homeless guys. One had a spray-can of gold paint, I thought it would add color to my plants. It was hard to communicate because his English was only slightly better than my terrible Spanish. (plus he was high from paint sniffing) I offered him half a bag of spinach for 2 sprays from his can. He wanted a dollar per spray, but I got him down to a dollar for 2 sprays. (still cheaper than buying a whole can) I guess I'm getting soft.... I went ahead and gave him the spinach for free, It's Easter after all. With their new lightly scattered gold highlights my plants looked 1st class. I put them in my freezer till Sunday.
Citizen Erased Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Aww for your Aunt, you're such a sweetie But really, spinach?
Author Gold Pile Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Aww for your Aunt, you're such a sweetie But really, spinach?Hi Darlin, The dry leafy kind...works great. In the summer even grass clippings can fluff it out.
sally4sara Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Putting any plant, alive or cut, in a freezer will not get you anything good. You will have mush by Sunday. In my shop we store cut flowers at 37 degrees. And most plants can't handle anything lower than 45. 50 to 60 if they are tropical.
SeraBella Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 The great thing about spinach is that it not only "fluffs" your flowers, but the receiver of the flowers can use it as a garnish, a snack, or add it to her next salad. Such a useful gift. And I'm sure the paint would just serve to build up the immune system.
Trialbyfire Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Some flowers are edible. Supermarket salad, tossed with a red wine balsamic vinaigrette, FTW!
Lizzie60 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 you are hilarious.. Veggies and flowers could look good together, it's all a matter of how you put them together... can look nice and fresh! but the gold paint was too much.. ewwwww... that's tacky...sorry GP... Thanks for the laugh...
2sunny Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I guess I'm getting soft... maybe so.... but YOU GP? :lmao::lmao:

Thanks for the laugh...The plants were just too green, just a dash color really helped. I thought it might be tacky too, but the paint dried really fast...not tacky at all:p
Author Gold Pile Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 maybe so.... but YOU GP? :lmao::lmao: Yup, me. I gave half a bag of spinach away. Not really the 1st time.... I once tried to do some volunteer work at a soup kitchen (I wanted to hit on a couple of the bleeding heart girls working there). To be safe (lots of unclean and ill folks there)I wore a toxic waste suit and sprayed everthing/one with lysol. They kicked me out for being insensitive:mad: I was just being mindful of my health.
Touche Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 You stole the pine cone idea. Anyway, remember this? http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t76356/
