tkgirl Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I have a question for y'all... has anybody here ever gone to see a psychic... like had their tarot cards or palm read etc? I have actually done it twice now and the more recent one (a tarot reading) was very cool... but still kind of freaky at the same time! So much of it made sense and for some reason I just feel more "at peace" now about everything... like I finally got the answers I was looking for. Anyways, just was curious if any of you here have tried it and what your experience was... thanks!!!
dreamergrl Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I've had a tarot card reading done several times. I didn't expect it to tell me answers - however what I loved about it was it gave me insight - it helped me look at things from several perspectives which helped me view the situation at different levels.
blind_otter Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I read tarot cards. I have three different decks. I've done it since I was 12, so that's like 16 years now!!! Augh!!! I feel old. Anyway, from my POV it's just a neat parlor trick. JMO.
dreamergrl Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I knew this thread was going to be posted. Oh yeah? Did your psychic tell you or do you have ESP?
NotMyselfNEmore Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I've had the Tarot cards read to me numerous times. Some were very good and some were very bad. I once had a reading with a lady that was recommended by a friend. Even though the reading was right on, she still wanted $400 to remove a "curse" I had made with fire. She wanted to charge me that money to meditate and find out who did it. After she finds out, I had to dish out another $200 to remove it and then, another $300 to receive a "blessing". She almost had me. I also had some that were right down crappy from the beginning. He did my reading using his book the whole time!! All he did was read all the possibilities the book gives. I could have done that myself! I've had "Santeria Priests" also do a spiritual reading on me. Every time, I suposedly had a "Muerto" that was making my life miserable. These "dead spirits" are very expensive to remove. You know where this is going... I tried it and it left me broke, absolutely BROKE and I was still having bad luck and all that jazz. I was more prone to believe these priests because of my background. My family happens to believe in Santeria and Voodoo. Unfortunately, I was scammed every time. Do I believe in spiritual readings? I believe in the spiritual world. Yes, we have many things we don't necessarily understand. We do have influences from other spirits and forces we can't explain. I just don't believe in readers. I do my own readings by observing my world around me and the different signals I get from the spiritual world. I try my best to let the unexplainable have a little part on what I do or what I pursue. I agree that it is a great entertainment but I don't live my life by any of these readings. Maybe I haven't encountered the right person who will actually give me great insight on my life and help me chose the correct path without emptying my wallet. Until then, I will continue to have my own spiritual radar.
Author tkgirl Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 I knew this thread was going to be posted. you crack me up... but you already knew that! Anyways, thanks everyone for the responses so far... I'm not sure where I really stand on the whole psychic thing... it is a little out there, even for me! But I have to admit that most of what she told made a lot of sense... Also, she was very positive, and did not ask for more money for anything like having a curse removed or whatever... i.e she had no motive for what she told me, just seemed to really want to help... like I said, it's weird how I feel now after having done this... more at "peace" with everything.. it actually feels really good!
rainfall Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I called a psychic once when I was 15. Nothing they told me was accurate or even close to being true. Another time I went to see a psychic and anything I asked them was answered with, "Its to early to tell. You should come back in a few weeks." I never went back and haven't been to a psychic since.
LoveLace Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I saw a psychic once. Although some things made sense, it still seemed as though she was just taking a shot at some general concepts. Anyway, after the session, she stops suddenly and says, "Do you eat strawberries"?...I was like, what? She said "I see strawberries all around you". Oookaaay Then I called my mom to tell her how it went. Mom says "Guess what? I just went to the store and bought some strawberries!"...Whoah, right? At work the next day, a lady poured out tons of strawberries at lunch...whoah! Then I told a friend about all this later and he says, "It's strawberry season, dummy"...but still...mom told me about the strawberries right after! This kind of thing could almost be considered a religion - some will find answers from their experience, but others may not. It also depends on the talent of the person doing the reading..it could be just a matter of reading facial expressions and body language...hell, these days, if you book an appointment in your name, all they gotta do is google ya! ha ha.
maynicholas Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Do you know the three things people visit a psychic for? Love, Money, & Family. They all know this. They watch you to see where you give a spark (suddenly become interested) and go from there. I actually used to read cards for fun and 'changed the lives' (according to them) of several people in doing so. The truth is that people give you really subtle cues (sit up, a fleeting change in facial expression, start tapping their foot, etc.) when you are anywhere near what they are seeking advice for. You just grab it and go. You are 'really good' when you simply give them a new perspective (which is really just a regurg of the Marie Claire article you just read) In all fairness- the psychic could have really wanted to be a therapist, but didn't want to go through all the schooling and accreditations so took the cheaper, less structered way?
LucreziaBorgia Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) Some 'psychics' are really just people gifted in cold reading. I've seen a few who used tarot as part of their services, and watched them misread the cards. I guess they don't count on someone actually knowing the cards. After 22 years of reading them, I can tell when someone is bullsh*tting their way through a reading. It makes me mad when they actually charge people for bogus 'readings'. Not all are unscrupulous, but I guess you get that in pretty much any profession. When I read the cards, I ask the person I'm doing the reading for not to tell me what their question is until after the reading is done, or even give me any hints. I just lay out the spread and read what is there, no more no less. When I'm done they look like this: and invariably they'll ask how I know so much, etc. I tell them that I don't know anything about them. I just lay out the cards and tell what I see. I've never charged anyone, though I've had more than a few people give me gifts instead when I refused their money. I think the coolest gift I got was from a guy who would come and have me teach him how to read spreads on a weekly basis. He went to Hungary and brought me back two packets of paprika and a deck of Gypsy cards. The most fun I've had with my cards was at the Harry Potter #7 book release party. I was in the 'fortune telling' group, and we did fake 'fun' fortunes at first and then I got tired of that and brought out my cards and did quick three card readings. Before long, there were fifty people there waiting at our table! I met a lot of people that night. Freaked out a lot of people too. I've worked Halloween parties, bars, etc. - its all for fun for me really. I enjoy it. I don't see it as prophetic so much as a way to meditate on a problem using cards. It really does help you see a problem from more angles that you would have considered, and offers up suggestions for future outcomes. Edited March 19, 2008 by LucreziaBorgia
serial muse Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) I called a psychic once when I was 15. Nothing they told me was accurate or even close to being true. Your psychic apparently had a magic-8 ball! I have a deck of tarot cards and have had friends who did readings...but generally if I do a reading myself I can pretty much guarantee it is going to tell me what I already know. Like LB said, a skillful "psychic" can read her (or his) subject while doing a vague-ish reading, watch for responses and then zoom in and elaborate on the ones that seem to hit home. I've been to a tarot card reader before and felt suitably spooked and then, talking about it afterward with a friend, realized that she hadn't said anything that insightful, but that my mind had filled in the key gaps which made it seem prophetic. But prophecy aside, tarot cards can be a useful way to talk out a problem to yourself by looking at it from various angles. The cards cover a lot of different aspects of life, so it's kind of like writing in a journal or telling yourself a story. I have had that peaceful feeling post-reading that you describe, tkgirl...but I get a similar peaceful feeling after sorting out my thoughts in my journal. Like I'm back in tune with myself. And the cards are pretty and interesting. Edited March 19, 2008 by serial muse
BlueEyedGirl Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I have been reading cards for myself for years. I have a deck of gypsy fortune telling cards that are so worn out they are falling apart. They are the most accurate things ever. I have had few tarot decks as well but they are not nearly as good. Gypsy cards are the ones I rely on guidance for almost anything. They are especially good for describing situations and people's motives. I tend to be paranoid and negative and they show me when my worries are warranted and when they aren't. They are also consistent and even when I repeat readings on the same issue I get similar answers. I wouldn't pay for a reading though.
