SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Any tips to help reduce swearing? I swear way too much and would simply like to stop, or at least reduce it. Anyone else have this problem?
SoStupid Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I do tend to say the f word alot, Being around ppl who dont swear as much helps a bit.
blind_otter Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I swear too much, too. I get frustrated and bad words just spring to mind. It comes from my mom - she swore like a sailor throughout my childhood and adolescence, so no one ever really said anything when I started to swear, too...now I'm trapped. I'm subscribing to get advice.
carhill Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I see it as a class issue and a byproduct of frustration. In my case, I work in the blue collar world where such language is more prevalent. I also have been pretty frustrated for a few years, hence more use of profanity. Neither of my parents ever used profanity; harshest word my dad ever used was "darn". I've found, as I spend more time with folks with a similar mindset as myself (decidedly not blue collar) and reduce my frustration in my marriage (through MC), I'm not swearing nearly as much. Lately it's been very rare. My dad used to say people swear when they've run out of intelligent things to say. I hate it when dad is right
Author SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 " My dad used to say people swear when they've run out of intelligent things to say. I hate it when dad is right" Yeah, I don't really believe that though. Maybe because I am highly emotional in certain situations is when this happens. But you know, if someone is swearing ALL THE TIME for no reason, yeah, I have to think they are pretty ignorant and/or classless. Like at work, I hardly EVER swear. Because I refuse to give a crap there. But at home, with the dogs, kids, whatever, I just cant help it but have to stop. I say 'fudge', and Unders, its funny you mention dag nab it, because I have been using that! How weird! I tried Dad Gum too (read that in a comic book). But I'm convinced there is something mentally going on that if I just had a grasp on, I can build off of it. I bet I have to mentally prepare myself BEFORE something triggers me emotionally.
carhill Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I'm similar (react emotionally) but my intelligence tells me dad was right I think the precise words he used were "emotion speaking without the benefit of intellect". My problem is many of my contemporaries use profanity as a language, rather than as an exclamation point in an emotional response. It's often hard to gauge exactly where they're going. I also don't engage in "trash talking" about women, which is common, or ogling. I just don't see women that way, no matter how I've been treated. It's a matter of dignity with me.
Lishy Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Set up a swear jar where you have to put $2 every time you swear You will soon stop, either that or you would be skint (and probably start swearing about it!)

You know, thats a great way to put it! Those that use profanity as a language is rather lazy and could definitely appear non-intelligent. Its like comedians are to me as well. The funniest ones to me are the ones that don't swear all the time, with the exception of George Carlin

LOL! Yep, I'd be swearing about having all my money in the jar. I should try the swear jar anyway. Why not?
Lishy Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Yup! And then you send me all the money to go and buy new shoes! I love shoes!
John Who Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 F--k when you find out how to fu-kin stop swearing let my bi-cha-s know, because i have that same problem.
whichwayisup Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Replace the words. Say FRICK instead of the real F word. Say shiitake mushrooms instead of the real S word. Then you work on WHY you swear.
Lishy Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Ok I will help you Every time you swear I will shout "I told you to stop fu**ing swearing you sh**ty bas**rd, swear again and I will chop ya fu**ing bollox off!" Will that help?
Pyro Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Any tips to help reduce swearing? I swear way too much and would simply like to stop, or at least reduce it. Anyone else have this problem? I use to have the problem. Do what I did: date someone who doesn't swear and you get use to it. That b*tch did end up being bad news. I like WWIUs suggestion of replacing the words.
underpants Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 You could use Spongbob's curse word. "Tarter Sauce"
Author SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 Boy, there is so much great advice here...(sarcasm) come on guys! I thought everyone was supposed to seriously honest on LS?! And dating someone is out of the question. I'm married, but I'll ask anyway to see if its worth it.
Pyro Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 And dating someone is out of the question. I'm married, but I'll ask anyway to see if its worth it. Sorry, I had no idea. It couldn't hurt to ask though.
Author SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 You could use Spongbob's curse word. "Tarter Sauce" Unders, you are freakn me out, because I do use 'Barnacles'!, also from Spongebob! We think alike on the swearing replacement words (and btw, the episode about swearing is a pisser!)
Author SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 Sorry, I had no idea. It couldn't hurt to ask though. Hey, here is how the conversation went: "Hey honey. Can I date someone that doesn't swear to help me stop swearing?" "Sure!" "Thanks!" (and then I woke up)
Touche Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 The best way to stop cursing? Get rid of the kids and the dog. Simple. Hope that helps.
Author SoHotZanzibar Posted March 8, 2008 Author Posted March 8, 2008 Doesnt help when one of my favorite TV people is Gordon Ramsey
whichwayisup Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Boy, there is so much great advice here...(sarcasm) come on guys! I thought everyone was supposed to seriously honest on LS?! Hey! My advice was pretty good!
