I have known this guy for a while now and everything from the start seemed to be going fine. Until at one point he ended a conversation he and I were having with this:

"I'm not that happy when I know that you're not that happy...it's just that way... my life isn't just about me."

What does that mean? What is he trying to say exactly?

I think he's in denial of his feelings. Is this possible? I don't know. Or perhaps he was just complimenting me in a friendly way?

That could be taken in a few different ways what was the context of the conversation in general?

You sound as though you don't really like what he said to you. Since I don't know what you said before that statement, I would take it as a compliment. What I take it as him saying is: "When you're sad, I'm sad. That's just how it is, my life isn't about thinking only of me."

If anything, I would say he's trying to connect with you more and letting you know that how you are feeling affects him, too.

It means: Id like to sleep with you so I try to come up with something sensitive and caring.....oh I f@ked up.....I have to qualify myself now.

Sand&Water please stop analysing, either you want to end up with him in bed or you dont.

If he's serious, then it really bothers him when you're down. I can relate. If he knows your upset, he gets upset - not with you, per se, but for you. He cares.
