Uh, yeah...I really wasn't sure where to post this and thought "dating" was my best bet since I'm doing this for dating purposes. This weekend I plan to get my first ever bikini wax. I'm terrified and I want some advice as to what to expect: how much will it hurt? How much will they take off? How long does it stay off? Will I end up with a rash or swelling/raw skin, etc. for several days afterward? Are there any dangers I should know about (like them accidently ripping off your labia or something)? How much does it usually cost? Any tips as to the kind of place I should go? I live in NYC and was thinking about going to one of those Korean beauty places as they tend to be very good, very discrete, and cheaper than other places.

Advice and cautionary wisdom welcome; thanks!

I got a brazilian bikini wax before my honeymoon when I got married, years ago. The memory stays with me to this day. I think I had a ****ty beautician or something. It cost about $100.

All I can say is that at the time, it didn't hurt all that much. Granted, I did take some narcotic pain relievers before going to the appointment. But afterward? It was hell I felt like i had a bad sunburn on my labia for 3 days after the fact. I slathered my area with vit. E oil and aloe, to no avail. I couldn't do the dirty deed for a few days after I got waxed.

I had a bikini wax done, my friend held my hand because I was terrified. It hurt like you wouldn't believe - I screamed, even cried. Never again will I do it. I trim now and have no problem shaving the bikini line. I have a really good electric shaver...

The first time is the worst pain, because you don't know what to expect. After a few times, it's not fun, but no big deal. Ask your friends who they might recommend, since a good one will chat with you, help you to relax and direct/explain what they need/are going to do, to you.

The secret to reducing inflammation/irritation and removing wax is tea tree oil.

Good luck!

I agree with this.

I'm not that "hairy" down there to begin with, though.

Before my first one, I took Ibuprofen. No idea if it helped - it's still painful, but nothing that I think a person couldn't endure. Besides, it only took about 15 to 20 minutes.

I went to a professional "wax lady." IMO, she's totally worth it. I paid about $100 for the first one and about $50 for the every 3 to 4 week "touch-ups" that only take about 10 minutes, don't hurt as bad as the first few times, and leave me silky, silky smooth! ;)

My gal puts a very soothing lotion on afterwards, that feels tingly. After the "tingle" wears off a few hours later, I feel little - if any - irritation. Although, the first couple of times I did have more irritated skin the first day, it was pretty much resolved by the next morning.

I'm sure you'll do fine. It's not exactly a pleasant experience, but it's certainly not the worst thing you could do, either, and the results are pretty worth - it in my opinion. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. BlindOtter and WWIU, you really freaked me out. The whole point of this is to look fabulous down there for my little week-long fling next week so as to inspire as much nookie as possible. If I might get inflamed such that I can't have sex for three days, then I'm not doing it. And $100!!!!! Is that standard? If I don't get the Brazilian wax and just ask for a "bikini line" wax, how much hair from the vulva do they take off? Sorry to be so explicit but I want to be as informed as possible, espeically if I end up with one of those Korean ladies who just want to get the job done and barely speak English. Do they...sorry...do they rip off hair all the way back to between your a*s cheeks?

I'M SCARED!!!!!

If you go in for a regular bikini wax, they will only clean up the parts that might stick out when wearing a bikini. So along the sides, where the torso meets the leg. And that is really no big deal.

A brazilian is a whole other event though. A brazilian they take every single strand of hair, including around the butt. It is a very intimate procedure. In order to get it all, they even have you throw your knees over your head.

The first time I had a brazilian done, the whole salon heard me cussing. Each time afterward it became less and less painful. I did have some redness but it really didn't last for days.

A couple of words of caution. 1. don't get it done on a humid day - tomorrow looks fine in NYC. 2. You may be one of the unfortunate ones who gets ingrown hair when it grows back - to me this was the worst part of waxing. They are easily treated, but they are just gross.

Ultimately I got Laser - which is fairly close to permanent - although didn't do the full brazilian for that, it felt to juvenile.

I say go for it - WTF - you and he will both LOVE the results and enjoy a very fabulous week.

yeah go for it. i've had it done and it wasn't a big deal for me. I didn't have to put my knees over my head and it only cost 50 bucks. it was kinda lame though because my hair started growing back just three days later.

My best friends is a beautician, and she did my first wax for me when we had both ahd some champagne.... it did hurt, but my boyfriend loooooved it so it was worth it. I went to a korean place on east 45th and 3rd avenue when i was in NYC- they were sooooo cheap. Ask for Gloria she is awesome.

Aw, shucks, SB--I wish I'd read your post a few hours ago. Well, I went to a place in Union Square and did the deed! Manicure, pedicure, bikini wax. The latter definitely wasn't the most fun...and yeesh, what a job to have, yanking hair off of random people's genitalia . But I still have my labia and no rash and wow it looks great. I hope my week-long fling likes it, too :o.

Thanks for the advice, everyone--and I'll definitely try the place you recommend next time, SB!
