phyonaphan Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 (edited) Alanis Morissette - That Particular Time Simple Together Not as We These ones are tough to listen to, real downers, but could be relevant to your situation and really worth a listen. This girl really nails it when it comes to writing about breakups Fiona Apple - Waltz (Better than fine) This song is a pep talk, it will make you feel better and more optimistic about the future Good luck! shadowofman Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Tegan and Sara - Where Does the Good Go? I understand and relate better to women because of these ladies.
shadowofman Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Actually that was more of a relationship on the outs song. This is a breakup song. Nineteen
Snap22 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 I really like this thread, music has helped me loads since my break up. It reminds me that im not the only one going through it. I would recommend: Robyn 'Heartbeat'- the accoustic version is beautiful, she's talking about moving on because she knows its the right thing but describes the pain of every move forward she makes. Robyn 'Should've Known'- If you wanna get angry this is great, basically she's saying that everyone else could see he was a waste of space except her but now she can see she should've seen it coming. Sugababes 'better'- This is one for when you really really think you cant get through the day, it reminds you that 'its you that makes you you'. Very uplifting. Adele 'First Love'- This is a really moving song, its about saying good bye to your first love. This one is good for dumpers as well as dumpees. Gill Scott 'Golden'- A real feel good track thats about reclaiming your life and moving forward. Amy Winehouse 'Tears Dry On Thier Own'- love this song, this will make you feel stronger and realise you can get over it. Mariah Carey 'Dont Forget About Us'- This one's quite sad but im sure we've all felt what she's singing about. There are loads more but im at work right now and cant remember them all. Hope they help.
phyonaphan Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Ok Ignore the stupid fan made videos on all these lol Simple Together That Particular Time Not as We Waltz

vintagecat Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Okay this shows how old I am: I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor One of the original break-up anthems. It can probably be downloaded on an MP3 site. Cat
Snap22 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 James Blunt 'Goodbye My Lover' This is one of the saddest songs ever written in my opinion. I cried listening to it even before I had my heart broken.
Pyro Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 (edited) This one is hot off the presses: Theory of a Deadman- So Happy If you are familiar with the band, they actually have quite a few worthy break-up songs. Other bands to consider: Three Days Grace and Puddle of Mudd. Edited February 13, 2008 by Pyro
bustertypsy Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Have a listen to this and tell me what you think?
Pyro Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Another good one that comes to mind: Barely Breathing-Duncan Shiek Some of the best lyrics for a break-up song IMO.
sedgwick Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Whenever anyone asks this question, I always respond with: Ani DiFranco's "Dilate!" Best album ever for getting over a breakup. "Untouchable Face" and "Superhero" are fantastic post-breakup-pissed-off songs. Here's another thread about the same thing that might give you some more: http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t66137/
blackbird Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Off the top of my head. Lots of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (ex. "The Weeping Song"), Swans (ex. "Love Will Save You [but It Won't Save Me]). Cat Power - "Good Woman". Elliott Smith. And lots and lots of Tom Waits. Preferrably along with a bottle of whiskey.

I find it funny how you just wrote Elliott Smith with no song as if his whole musical canon is about breakups. My favorite breakup song is definitely "Lost Cause" by Beck. The video to it is also amazing.
Travis300 Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 2 songs that kill me whenever I hear them are.. Jet - Look what you've done One republic - Apologize
blackbird Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I find it funny how you just wrote Elliott Smith with no song as if his whole musical canon is about breakups. Heartbreak, pretty much!
