Bruce Almight: funny film, one of jim carrey's best, but does the christian community approve it?

My mom once said that it's bad, because it's basically making fun of God.

What do christians think?

I didn't feel like it made fun of Christians at all. It wasn't very religious and neither was the main character. It was just a movie about God getting his attention and giving him his powers to see what he would do with them.

How can anyone come to the conclusion that it was making fun of God?

Bruce Almighty wasn't half as good as Evan Almighty. And that one had HUGE religious/Christian/Jewish undertones.

I loved the Noah's Ark theme and how he lost the respect of his wife and kids. THAT'S what being faithful does to a person. I wonder strongly about those that expect prosperity and the good life in exchange for so-called "faithfulness".

But that's just my opinion.

Bruce Almighty was one of the stupidest and worst movies I have seen. Banal, trite, and a huge load of wasted potential on what could have been an interesting and funny premise.

Anyway, it's not making fun of God at all. It isn't up to the task. There are some Christians who think that anything short of Charlton Heston Biblical epics are making fun of God. This is because they are overly sensitive and lack the intelligence to recognise the difference between humour and mocking. Simply place humour too close to God and they throw a tantrum. This is the sort of person who would sincerely think that Monty Python's Life of Brian was making fun of Jesus, even though the central character wasn't Jesus, and in fact the only appearance Jesus makes in the movie is when he gives part of the sermon on the mount more or less verbatim.

What is your opinion on the matter, andy?

And I need to add this.

Bruce Almighty doesn't mock God to me because it seemed to show how deeply flawed and selfish the Bruce character was. We can make Bruce most of us humans and we'd probably do something similar if given the power to do so.

How can one mock God, while they are so busy showing how inept some of us humans are in light of all of the attriutes we believe God to have?

I especially loved the part when he started hearing people's prayers. When its God hearing it, its omnipotence and omnipresence in action. But when its one of us, its like being schitzo!! LOL.

I didn't like Bruce Almighty but it wasn't because it was "making fun of God". My apathy is directly related to the fact that Jim Carey was all over the movie. He didn't leave room for the other actors/actresses to shine. His overly expressed emotions, phrases and mannerisms were a bit too much for me. As for the plot (without Jim Carey), it's quite comical. I like the fact that a human was given the opportunity to contain all of God's powers and make a disaster out of them. That shows us that before we complain that God is not doing something for us, we should think about the fact that we really don't know all of God's dealings anyway!

As for Evan Almighty... Loved it. It's a very funny movie. I loved the one-liners and the overal message was very deeply rooted on religious teachings (of any kind). My son absolutely loved it and even talked about the movie for weeks after we watched it.:p

Frankly, I liked it best when George Burns played God. ("Oh, God", "Oh, God Book II, etc.) He did a great and respectable job and his performances were well received. I think God would like it if everybody tried their best to play Him.

i agree i dont think its bad till it tell you gods is bad, openly bashes god, or tells you to dump your religon.

It's a movie. It has nothing to do with God. The only thing it does is acknowledge that God exists.

Okay, so we've come to the conclusion that the film doesn't necessary mock God.

But what about the black guy who played God? Wouldn't that be called imitation?

Anyways, I'm interested to know what a christian's point of view to this. If you're a christian, say that you are.

What does race have to do with anything? It would be imitation regardless of the race of the character playing God. We are purported to be made in His image, his likeness - not his race as a spirit doesn't have a race.

Acting by definition is pretending to be somebody else. As long as Morgan Freeman doesn't actually think he's god (which I'm pretty sure he doesn't) and isn't intentionally trying to deceive people (which I'm pretty sure he isn't) then what's the big deal?

If god created man to his image, why be offended if a man represents god in a movie?

Anyway, I think religion always finds a way to be offended.

By the way, there tends to be a lot of sex, drugs, violence and cursing in movies... and I hear these actors thanking their gods when they get an oscar... are these movies approved of by their churches?

I'm sure as long as the actors don't commit the unforgivable sin of playing a homosexual character in a movie, the majority of churches could care less.

D.
