serendip Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 So last night I went out on a date. It was alright except for one part...when I first went to give her a kiss on the cheek at the restaurant...I could smell the perfume she was wearing...it was the same as the one the ex used to wear back in 94(she didn't wear perfume anymore when we got back together after 10 yrs...the second time around). It just brought back so many memories...but not of our most recent relationship. It brought back the memories of our relationship in 94...back when we were innocent, young and the world was beautiful. It's crazy...how strong a scent can be that it would bring back such distant memories. It kind of took away the annoyance I felt for the ex for a bit. Well anyway I had to ask my date to excuse me after smelling that and went to the washroom to compose myself. The rest of the date went well...had a nice time. But I can't believe the correlation of scents and memories...it's so strong for me. Any one else experience this?
Jmina Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 the part of the brain that controls your sent is closely connected to the emotional part of the brain, and also the emotional part of the brain was evolved before the rational part... and on top of that the first sense we had to develop was smell... so maybe this has something to do with scents being so connected to our memories and feelings...
norajane Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Oh, yes, scents are imprinted on the brain and evoke strong memories and emotions. I used to be involved with a guy at work years ago, and frequently wore a perfume that he always commented on. Even though we haven't seen each other in a couple of years, he still brings up that perfume sometimes when we chat. I actually asked Santa for it at Christmas - I'd forgotten how much I loved it, and yes, it does bring back a lot of memories. I've also heard that men are drawn to vanilla scents, because they evoke baking smells associated with their childhood, mom, and home.
s_n_d Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Scents are a killer!! I miss the "musk" of my ex. He never wore perfume or anything but he always smelled good..It sounds kind of silly saying I love the way he smelled. But i really did. I guess it must be the phaermones(Probably the wrong spelling of the word:p).

I think this is a major indicator of compatability- we are heavily influenced by scents and musks. My exbf had a musk that reminded me of the forest and freshbaked bread- LOVED it. My ex before him had a smell like black pepper- hated it- very short relationship. Scents are so powerful- maybe more than the visual in some cases. It's something that's ok to miss, ok to be affected by. It's only human.
Author serendip Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 don't tell the girl about this. which girl...the girl I went on a date with or my ex who I barely talk to anymore It's incredible how the scent brought me back to those memories...of the ex in 94. I remember how I saw her sitting by herself on a large balcony full of people...and I just sat beside her and we started talking about art and literature and just life(as we knew it back then) in general. It's as if we knew each other all our lives. It was beautiful. It's kind of funny...that I didn't even think of those memories when we got back together 2 years ago...but a scent brought those memories back. Moon river, wider than a mile I’m crossing you in style some day Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ your way Two drifters, off to see the world There’s such a lot of world to see We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waitin’ ’round the bend My huckleberry friend, moon river, and me </felt like a Andy Williams moment>
Green Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 dont tell any girls about this (not your ex/ or the girl your dating)
niceguy27 Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 My ex used to comment all the time on how I smelled. No cologne or anything. Even in the morning she would smell my neck and would make a comment on how good I smelled. The scent of her shampoo brings a flood of memories back when I smell it.

Did you buy a couple of bottles of her shampoo...just to ocassionally smell it and then curl up in a fetal position...

Ms. Red Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 It works the opposite way also. Every time I smell fresh flowers I'm thrown back to my best friends funeral. It's been 20 years & it still happens every time. She had so many flowers we were running out of places to put them.
