I've got a belly piercing, but a tattoo isn't something I've ever been tempted by - but I think that surviving an extreme struggle/overcoming a major difficulty is an excellent reason for getting a tattoo.
couldn't you do something less ugly like buying a new outfit or writing a book about it?

I have 1 tattoo and at one time had my belly button pierced and I still have my tongue pierced.

I took the belly button piercing out because they can take FOREVER to heal and I kept catching my pants and belts on it. Not fun or conducive to healing quickly. I wouldn't get it again.

I definitely didn't get them to feel better about myself. ON the contrary the tattoo and tongue piercing marked significant milestones in my life that I wanted to remember. I am planning another tattoo. Not completely sure on the design, but it will be original and mark the completion of my master's degree.

The jobs I have held my tattoo or tongue piercing were not an issue. I even taught in a middle school classroom in conservative Idaho. In fact most people don't even know I have my tongue pierced. I put clear balls on the barbell and don't walk around flaunting it. My career will also not be affected by my tattoo or tongue piercing.

I find tattoos very attractive but they are definitely not a deal breaker for me. A lack of brains, manners, and confidence or over abundance of ignorance are deal breakers for me.

and what could be sexier than a muscular girl covered in tatoos who thinks she knows the meaning of life?

Haha!

I didn't mean meaning of life; what I meant to say was as soon as I find something in my life that I know will be eternally meaningful to me, I'll get a tattoo.

It's still coming though. For now I'm a nihilist.

What do men think about tattoos on women? If a man is really turned on by them, will he be happy with a girl that does not have any? This is especially for those guys who are really into tattoos, in general. I don't think those of us without them really understand the addiction...

How about piercings? i.e belly button...is this still in?

I'm a non-tattoo-ed guy here.

In general, I say live and let live, but my preference would be

1. A small, discrete tattoo, like on a hip, or ankle of something that meant something to her (unless it's her ex-BF LOL).

2. No tattoos at all.

3. Large, prominent tattoos

Piercings, I don't like the tongue ones just because they look uncomfortable to me. I understand that position isn't logical. Seems like they could interfere with kissing? Gosh, I've led such a sheltered life...

I can't stand tattoos on men or women. In my opinion, people who get them feel inadequate and need something to bring attention to themselves. Sadly, when they get older they have to get a mortgage on their home for the money it takes to remove them. If they're visible, it's pretty difficult to get a job.

Often, people get them when they're drunk, depressed or otherwise in a strange mood. They look cheap and serve no purpose. Nice jewelry can be selected, put on and removed at will.

As for piercings, if they help in the reception of distant, high quality radio stations I'm all for them. Otherwise, I now pause for a moment of silence for those who died from infections contracted during the course of their installation.

I was not drunk, depressed, or in a weird mood when I got my tattoos. And I did NOT get them for attention. My tattoos were done in dedication to family, and to put something I found beautiful on a canvas that was otherwise sitting empty. I have only three, they are strategically placed and can be covered if needed. I think the generalization you made was wrong. I agree, that tattoos are not for everyone, but the snobbery that you displayed in your reply wasn't needed. To each their own in their likes and dislikes, but the world needs a little less judgment.

I totally agree. Who gives a crap really about what other people are doing when it has no affect on them at all?

A well-done tattoo can look alright - but IMO it would look just as good if she had no tattoo there. Whereas most tattoos are, quite frankly, sub-standard if not downright ugly.

They're like the lazy man's way of feeling tough. Instead of watching their diet and working out for forty minutes a day six days a week they go get a tatoo and all of a sudden they're a tough guy

and what about a guy with tattoos who does workout? there are many of them

I could. Buying something for myself that would serve as a memento, writing stuff (for my eyes only) about it is more my way of handling things. Also, I've never been the kind of person who goes much for body art. One piercing in each ear and one navel piercing is enough for me personally....but some very visual people regard regard their own bodies as a sort of canvas. It's down to personal taste, I guess.

Funnily enough, I had you figured as a man who would like tattoos on women. Not great big tattoos, but the kind of "I got this tasteful little tattoo on my hip while backpacking through the less touristy parts of Sierra Leone, and I designed it myself" that a small, pale Bohemian woman living the bulimia lifestyle in a sparse attic apartment might have.

I've really got to stop making such close associations between you and an ex of mine. I don't know why I do that.

If I was attracted to a girl, I don't think an existence or lack of existence of a tattoo would make it or break it. People get tattoos for certain reasons, some get it to show off and be different and some get it to signify overcoming great adversity. Though I think a tattoo on a girl would more than likely be a turn on for me anyway :lmao:
