I was on a blog (advicegoddess.com, Amy Alkon) and I gave a response to a poster who's commentary on her realtionship with here boyfriend made it seem to me like he was an option in her life. My take was that there is a certain amount of need involved. Obviously I am talking about a fairly settled relationship. To me the other option is the boyfriend is just an option. I understand that relationships are dynamic but at some point, if the relationship is settled is the guy (or gal) still just an option. And if so how long is this carried on. Exclusivity? Marriage? If women or men are continually evaluating the relationship if it is settled at what point do they decide its worth putting work into if they run into difficulties? To me it sounds like this woman would stay as long as hunky dory but would be gone if the guy or in other cases gal encountered a tough time.
