How can you tell when a stranger is just being polite?

About a week ago I saw this really attractive girl who was also running for the bus. We exchanged a smile, sort of an acknowledgement smile.

I saw her the next day but didn't say anything. We got off and just happened to be walking side by side. I made a comment about the timetable, and she said something back. We chatted about it for a few minutes while we walked to the connecting train. I gave her my name and she gave me hers. But the train was so packed that I was the only person who could get on so she moved to the next carriage. When we got off I waited by the lift for her to catch up and we resumed chatting. Probably chatted for a good 10 minutes before we went separate directions.

Does this sound like somebody who was interested in chatting with me, or was just being polite? And the next time I see her which will be in a few days, what should I say? Should I ask for her number if the second conversation goes well?

Since you'll be seeing her in a few days, I think you should devise a little test. When you see her again, just look at her without saying anything, if it doesn't take her long to recognize you and say hello then you've done something right.
