How do guys act when they have been hurt in the past and then they find somone they are interested in but are too afraid to take it to the next level?

Me and this guy were making progress, smiling and waving to each other and shyly talking to one another and making sure that I knew he was looking at me, but then literally overnight did a complete 180, no smiling, no waving, not even looking at me but then a week later comes by unexpectedly and says hello to everyone in my group and even was on his way back by me but I was busy so he turned around and left. One of my friends even told me that when he passed by and we looked at each other his face lit up. But then all of a sudden back to his distant self.

Could he be afraid or confused or not interested at all?

My guess is he is afraid...once bitten twice shy.

It could be that he sees similarities in the way you two were cozying up to each other that he may have done with the person that might have hurt him. Not saying its rational on his part, but he is probably just gunshy.

Have you ever thought about stopping him dead and saying, "hey, would you like to go to lunch sometime"?

I would love to but the problem is when he is in his "mood" for lack of a better word, it is so hard to catch him alone. Plus the fact that we use to see each other everyday, I mean everyday before we started to get "cozy" and so I have also lost some of my confidence that I had when we were "progressing".

How do you know he's been hurt in the past? What happened?

A mutual friend of ours mentioned it to me when I asked if he was available. He went through a very bad divorce, I don't know all of the details.
