redfathom Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I live in California. I was grocery shoppng yesterday and have recently been analyzing prices (I am trying to budget) and I was surprised and how much things cost. Name Brand Whole Milk = $4.69 1 gallon Orowheat Loaf of Bread = $3.99 Gallon of Gas = $3.30 (a few days ago) Bumble Bee Tuna = $1.99 Head of Lettace = $1.99 I thought it would be fun to take a poll to find out how much things cost where you are. You can add items to the list above. Also, what does rent cost nationwide and what do you get for that? In Southern CA a two bedroom one bath that is 800 square feet apartment (no yard) ranges in price from $800 a month to $2500 a month depending on where you live. Thanks.
heatherd1201 Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I am in Central Florida. Gallon of milk costs about the same. never heard of that kind of bread but I can get a good loaf of bread for like $1.99 Gallon of gas (yesterday) $3.09 Bumblebee tuna $.79/can Head of lettuce $1.49 Rent is about the same- I live in a higher end condo now, becuse of the neighbohood i live in. I pay for "the name!" We ownour ondo. 3 bed/2 bath 1300 sq feet. mortgage is about $1400/month plus "condo association fee" of $350 a month. Ive lived in 3 apartments in the area- I had a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1200 sq ft. for $849/month and I had a 1 bed/1 bath 700 sq ft. for $699/month. Really just depends on the area! (also- If I lived by disney it would be much much more expensive. I saw gas there last week for like $3.29)
Trialbyfire Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Here's the two I can compare. I've converted from metric litres and CAD currency to US Gallons and USD: Gas: $4.46USD/Gallon 2% Milk: $4.31USD/Gallon 800 sq/ft apt: Anywhere from $1000 - $3500 CAD
Author redfathom Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Hey Heather, thanks for the info. That is pretty close to Southern CA prices for rent. I live in a condo also, we have a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1,000 square feet condo and our motgage is $1800 and $200 for our HOA. It's not in a very nice neighborhood though . He have had a lot of break in's in the complex and we have security that patrols at night.
Author redfathom Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Trialbyfire, wow, gas is so expensive in Europe!!! What kind of MPG do the average cars over there get, I know they drive smaller cars then the SUV's most people here drive.

You paid $5.00 for whole milk? Go to Trader Joe's, you can get organic for cheaper than that.

I wanted a house there but we couldnt afford it (they START at $600k) so we started out with a condo in the neighborhood and will work our way to the house. Its funny because I'll say to someone "yeah, I live in ................." and they say "wow- youre so young to live there how did you do it!!!" I just dont tell them its a condo, not a house. SInce we own, we pay HOA and that sucks. Its getting rediculously expensive.

melodymatters Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Does your HOA fee's pay your insurance ? I lived in Fl for the past 4 yrs, and just moved to upstate Ny temporarily. The biggest difference is tax and insurance. In florida, lets say a 125k home will cost you about $1,200 in taxes and $1,200 insurance a year. Now here in upstate NY, the same house will cost you $4000 in taxes, but only $500 in insurance So do the math. Though everyone is always b*tching about FL insurance costs, it still comes to less with the lower taxes, PLUS, A/c is a luxury, if you don't heat your home ( about 400 a month up here) you will DIE.
Author redfathom Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Wow, $400 a month for your AC and heater. We really only run the A/C during summer of course and our bills then are around $260, we have electric. But I must say my dad does not have A/C and his electric bill always doubles during summer. Phateless, I will have to try that, it's up to my H though, I drink Soy Milk personally.
melodymatters Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 This is an interesting post RF ! I think you misunderstood though, in FL, my a/c would run about 200 in summer months, but the rest of the year it was only like 75. Now, here in NY, you are running your heat for like 6 months a year, and yes, it costs about 400 a month for those months. And milk HAS gotten really expensive ! I read somwhere that it was because the chinese were suddenly into dairy products and that was driving up the costs, but I haven't verified that yet !
allina Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I think that it's important to remember that wages vary a lot from location to location. The minimum wage in San Francisco is $9.15 while in some places it's $5.15. I live in the SF Bay Area, it's difficult to find a 450 sq. ft. studio for under $1,000/month here. As for what you asked about- Name Brand Whole Milk = I buy TJ's milk in a smaller size for $.89 Orowheat Loaf of Bread = I don't know about this brand, I buy bread at a bakery, anywhere from $1.29- $3.69 Gallon of Gas = $3.89 Bumble Bee Tuna = don't know, sometimes I buy canned tuna for my cats, it's only $.99 a can Head of Lettace = I'm lazy and buy pre-cut, pre-washed lettuce $1.29

The only one that I can answer is the cost of gas. I have seen it today vary from $2.98 up to $3.09.
bustertypsy Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Ok different country but I'll give the price in dollars(US) whole milk 1 gallon 6 dollars loaf of bread 2.50 dollars gallon of gas 9 dollars tuna 3 dollars lettuce 1.50 now that's value for money.....not!
Author redfathom Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Meldoy, well, I thought I understood your post - haha, $400, holy moly. Alina, yeah COL is an issue, I did not realize in SF that minimum wage was so high, in Southern CA where I am from it's $7.15. Of course in SF it does cost more to live. I should clarify, Orowheat is just one of the name brand breads here, so I guess the cost of any name brand bread where you are would work. The great thing about Orowheat is that they double package it, so it lasts for a really long time. *I sound like a spokesperson. I think it is interesting to compare COL to areas in the US vs. income. The average US income is $38,000, in Southern CA it's around $46,000. In Kentucky it's around $40,000. But it's cheaper to live in Kentucky, of course SD is coastal so you pay more for that. I met a women at a party yesterday she works for a local amusement park. She used to live in Iowa and had a 14 acre three bedroom two bath home with a garage and barn and she said her mortgage on that place was cheaper then her rent for the 1 bedroom she has here. She also said car's were cheaper to buy back there. Wow Buster, what are wages like where you are? Also, someone posted on another forum about the increase in wages vs. expenses and that 25 years ago bread was 700% cheaper, gas was 400% cheaper but her wages were only 25% less. I am not sure if I explained that correctly, but someone starting out entry level 25 years ago compared to now I don't think can afford things like they used to. I should add, I am 25 so I may be wrong, maybe some people can comment.
Enema Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I live in Australia. I've converted it to US prices for you and from our metric to your draconian. Name Brand Whole Milk = $3.50 / 1 Gal. Loaf of Bread = $3.20 Gallon of Gas = $4.00 2bdrm apartment in Brisbane... anywhere from $750 - $3000 a month depending on how far from the city.

I'm in the UK Litre of petrol or diesel £1.02p Milk per 2pints £0.90p Loaf of Bread £1.00p My one bedroom apartment/flat is worth £165,000 (yes thats about £330,000 USD) To rent the above would probably be £500-£800 per month. Most things here are expensive compared to the states for sure. all very expensive here.
laRubiaBonita Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 in the DC metro area- i am in maryland regular gas ranges from $3.04- $3.35 i get organic milk and 1/2 gallon is $3.49- $3.99 lettuce is around $2.00 a head bananas are $.59 a pound cigarettes are about $4.50 a pack but it really just depends on where you shop- i try only to buy things when they are on sale. rent varies dramatically around here too. i have a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apt. that i pay $940/ monthly- including all utilities. it is probably the best rental rate in the county too. but i do not have a washer and dryer in the unit. in a different complex my apt. would be over $1000 a month.
Star Gazer Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I live in Northern California. Name Brand Whole Milk (Gallon) = $3.79 Orowheat Loaf of Bread = $4.59 Gallon of Gas = $3.39 Bumble Bee Tuna = $1.09 Head of Iceburg Lettuce = $0.99 (other varieties are much more expensive) These prices are from the Safeway right by my work. The Bel-Air by my house is cheaper and much better quality. Rent in my area for a 2 bed/1 bath apartment will probably average $1,000-1,650. In SoCal (at least where I was living down there), rent could be anywhere from $1,200-6,000.

dutchie Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I live in Chicago: Name Brand Whole Milk (Gallon) = about $4 Orowheat Loaf of Bread = don't know about this brand, but I can get a good loaf of bread for about $2.50 Gallon of Gas = don't really know, don't have a car, but over $3 a gallon I am sure Bumble Bee Tuna = $.99 a can when on sale Lettuce= depending on where I shop and what time of year, varies between $.99-$2.00 Rents vary greatly depending on what neighborhood you live in. I don't live in a super trendy neighborhood, so the rents are pretty cheap. My current rent is $700 for 1200sq ft, 2 bedroom. However the heat bill is pretty high. If I wasn't on budget plan, in winter it would be about $400 a month.

I'd move up there right now but will wait til footy season is on! *Coco hearts Broncos*

sb129 Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I was recently in the US, and I was blown away by how much cheaper things were. OK, so your dollar isn't that great against the pound right now (2:1) and I DO live in London which is ridiculously expensive, but things that were significantly cheaper were: Eating Out Food in general Taxis Public Transport Clothes (many things that cost say £10 here cost $10 there) cosmetics, electronics Tourist Attractions/ tickets Although, its all relative isn't it, I am sure I would find NYC expensive if I was earning there, and I noticed that accomodation and rent were very expensive by anyones standards.

I'd move up to Brisbane too but they're running a little low on water ...
