and that's a deal breaker for me. ARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

You could always start...

After witnessing first hand quite a few people dying from lung cancer, I wouldn't want to marry a smoker.

It is so depressing.

If he asked, then it sounds like he's considerate about it. Maybe he'd be willing not to smoke around you. Would you be okay with it then? I'd be hesitant to stop seeing a guy I felt a connection with over one thing I didn't like, although I don't like to date smokers, either...

Ha ha, Melody...you got it!

And I still stand by my statement. Unless you're a size 4 or below, you really can't afford to be that picky.

Maybe you can teach him a better way though?

I prefer not to date smokers, but I did once. She smoked outside of her apartment and never in the car. So it was fine.

Yes, that is what he does. However, I don't like kissing a man who smokes and I can still smell it on his clothes. He will make a nice friend, though.

I have never dated smokers, and nonsmokers are not hard to find.

This is a tough one because I did feel a connection, and he felt one, too. I really have to stick to this one, though.

I don't blame you.. smoking is a yucky habit and after watching 2 of my parents ( Dad and Step Mom ) die from cancer due to smoking I have taken the attitude that if you smoke you die.. or you die from something smoking related..

What an awful way to die...

Their clothes will always smell so when you around them you will smell the stink.. and the cost of smoking can be in the excess of hundreds of dollars per month..

You have to pay to get cancer as well...and who wants to kiss an ashtray?

But...

Anybody can smoke.. it is their body.. you just have to make choices for yourself..

You're joking, right? Tell me you're joking.

You know, I'm pretty small, but if I was big girl, I'd be just as picky as I am now. Why? Because I don't HAVE to have a man. And I certainly wouldn't put up with second hand smoke and destroy my health JUST to have a man. No man is worth that to me.

And not only that, smokers can't keep up with me or my lifestyle.

That statement you made is for women who HAVE to have a man.

Nope, not joking. Nope don't HAVE to have a man, but love HAVING one.:)

Back in the days when I was less picky, I fell in love with a smoker. At that time, all that mattered to me was love, not practicalities. I even lived with him (although he did smoke outside the house only and he did try to quit).

But now? I won't even consider a smoker. Society's changed...people have wised up. Look at how there are less smokers outside of office buildings these days.

And I hate to say this but, the more educated people are, the less likely they are to smoke and if they DID smoke, the more likely they are to have quit.

Today you'll see fewer and fewer smokers in skilled, white collar jobs.

Where once smoking was a sign of affluence and high class (mid 20th century), it is now just the opposite.

I agree. I just grew up in a nonsmoking home and don't want to date someone who does, or raise a child in a smoking home. Also, my uncle died in April of lung cancer.

Luckily there are plenty of nonsmokers.

Yeah, smoking all around is unpleasant. There was a woman at work I was interested in that unfortunately I would see smoking like a smoke stack every break. When she decided to quit I anonymously delivered a pack of those tasty chewing gum packets with the flavored insides every week. She started smoking again, of course. Then she started dating a guy at the office who, surprise, was a smoking area denizen. I hear they are happily puffing still together.

Yup...smokers belong with smokers.....just two different breeds.

Me and my ex started to look like the odd couple. I'd be jogging while he was walking alongside me smoking.

And I hate to make generalizations here but.....smokers are more likely to have other unhealthy habits too...such as fast food...stuff like that.

In other words, I can look at a smoker and pretty much be sure that they don't exercise and they don't eat right.

It was really stupid. This girl at work smoked and was a runner.

What I have noticed about smokers is that they are fairly self-absorbed people. And that's not necessarily an insult, just an observation. These are people that are fine in their own worlds. Otherwise, they would quit to accommodate their non smoking friends and loved ones.

I've never seen a runner who smoked.

I don't know what you mean by self-absorbed in this sense but I WILL say this, they're inconsiderate. How many times do you see them toss their cigarette butts like the earth is their trash can? And even worse is when they throw them out of car windows.

For some reason they think that cigarette butts don't count as litter. They'd never think to throw a candy wrapper down (not in this day and age) but a cigarette butt is for some reason, ok.

All you have to do is get used to standing around outside with him every once in a while. No big deal.

That's such BULL.

Just going by tons and tons of them I've seen and known. Can't say I've ever known one that's eating tofu and is a jogger.

Most I've known, like fast food or high fat food and dont exercise. Just my experience.

I know people who smoke, and they're fine people. They just have that bad habit. I wouldn't generalize about them like some are. Although I will say that regular smoking is completely incompatible with a healthy lifestyle. I don't know anyone who smokes who bothers to exercise to any extent. I'm sure that's because 1) it's too difficult, and 2) it's a pretty major contradiction.

One of my favorite co-workers is a pretty heavy smoker, and it bothers me only because I really like him and I wonder when we'll get word that he has a serious illness. And I know of at least one person here on LS who should stop now for the same reason.

Really? And whom might that be? Hmmm....

As for Unique. You're mistaken. My H and I both smoke. Yep, we do. But we also look at least 10 years younger than our ages (or so we've been told.) We actually do eat tofu. Can you believe it? YIKES! We also take vitamins. And we're quite active. We garden. My H goes on hikes with our son and Boy Scouts all the time. We camp. We bike. We're always working on things around our house and property. I cook things that actually are fresh and not out of a box or can. Imagine that?

Yes, we smoke and drink though.:eek::eek:

We're horrible.

There's nothing wrong with having the preference of not wanting to date a smoker, though. I just never have. I have nothing against those who have, but I do have people I love who smoke and I want them to live as long as possible.

I can't stand the smell of smoke. I don't judge others who smoke, I don't want to be around smoke and I want a partner who wants to live a long time, also. I feel if I date a smoker, we are incompatible and it will always bother me and be at the back of my mind.

Where I work, none of my colleagues are smokers, and it does say something to me that out of a group of 50 highly educated people, none of us smoke.

Ok, I respect that. I understand that. It's not a great thing to smoke. It's a weakness. It's nothing to be proud of that's for sure.

So, where'd you come up with your screen name? Just curious?

I like French names.

This guy I went on a date with is taking pills to try to quit but when we were out he wanted to smoke. Isn't that dangerous? like more dangerous than just smoking?
