Establishing a social circle

How does one go about establishing a social circle in a new town? My social cirlce has pretty much gone with my ex after the break leaving me out in the cold.

Do you have a hobby? Look for a group that caters to this. I like to write- I took a single writing class that ended up yielding a huge new social circle for me. I never imagined that's what would happen, but that's what did.
