I want to be subtle about it and don't want to make him uncomfortable or anything. What works best and would be easiest to use next time I see him?

I find the easiest way is to break the barrier is to touch him when you greet him. I always go for a squeeze on the upper arm.

Then, to drive the point home, touch him on the forearm in the middle of conversation. Chances are he will touch you right back soon after.

Once you've done this once or twice, it'll become easier. It's a lethal weapon though. So use it wisely.

If he doesn't also touch me on the arm, does that mean I should back off?

No. After all practice makes perfect, and every guy is different.

Just to be clear, in the touch in the middle of conversation thing shouldn't last more then 3-4 seconds. While you are talking.

This might sound silly, but I practiced with a friend before trying it out on a guy.

I will always be eternally grateful to her. Except when she pulls the stunts on my boyfriend.

I would just give him a BIG hug the next time you see him!**

If you see him in a public place (not work), give him a peck on the check (not like kissing your Uncle though), softer. It's a generic hi that could break the ice or just be a friendly hello.

It wouldn't harm things.

The last guy I went out with, we worked together, and before we exchanged numbers or anything, he would always come over to me after he was done working and would say goodbye to me before he left. And after a couple of times of doing that, he gave me a really cute, flirty hug when he said goodbye. And it made me really happy... he did build up to it, though, by like standing really close to me, etc., so I guess my body language let him know that I was open to it. Does that help?

To test his interest level, give him a hug as soon as you see him. Extend your arms with a big smile on your face as if you are happy to see him. If he smiles back, he is receptive. If his smile is awkward and he hesitates slightly, it might mean he's uncomfortable. If he accepts your hug, determine if it is an open shoulder hug (where only his upper body/shoulders are touching you) or if the hug is a closed, full body hug. If it's a shoulder hug, he is not interested in you.
