(I wrote what I'd say to you if you gave me that ring but deleted it not to get banned or be too rude etc, and that the ring works)

My mom sent me her engagement ring for Christmas when I was about 16, in a lovely wooden box, along with a bracelet and belt that my father had specially designed for her. All of these were gifts my dad had picked out and given her.

It was extremely awkward to have opened this on Xmas day in front of my dad and stepmom, especially when my dad remembered every single piece in the box.

I got rid of everything- it didn't suit me and I felt like she gave it to me to hurt my dad.

I'm not a big fan of hand-me-down jewelry... I think especially an engagement ring should be picked out specifically for the recipient. Case in point is people who have occupations where a high setting could catch on things or make work awkward, or people who prefer either gold or silver tones.

My youngest brother had that dilemma. He had two rings with which to propose: his grandmother's and his fiance's grandmothers. Both heirloom rings, beautiful but quaint, both with multi stone settings - neither one quite 'worked' on her hand or looked quite right. He went to a jeweler and had the biggest stones taken from each ring (one carat each) and had them fit into a custom setting he designed for his fiance. The settings and other diamonds were put away otherwise intact in a safe place. They are planning on putting together another piece of jewelry from it eventually. I guess this way, they are able to take from the past, apply it to the future, while keeping the past intact on some level.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do, and the woman you end up with. You may find that the ring you have works fine and looks great, and you may decide that the ring doesn't quite 'fit' the girl and want to come up with something custom using the existing ring/stones as a base for something new.
