Some people also have difficulty being honest with others and prefer the soft-sell, which doesn't do anyone any good. At least when you're honest, the other person has the ability to believe it or to deny it. Either way, it allows the person to move on. In the situation mentioned in the article, I suspect the girl's ex was conflict avoidant, thus chose the path of a break instead of a break-up.
