shadowplay Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 My bf and I went on a double date over the weekend with his friend and gf. This was my first ever double date. The whole thing felt like some sort of competition between my bf and his friend. Whenever my bf showed me some kind of slight physical affection, his friend mimicked it with his gf and had to step it up a notch. It reminded me of some ridiculous Seinfeld scenario. Also his friend and gf both atcted hostile to me for no apparent reason. I really felt like the whole point of the date was a pissing contest. Is this normal?

Double dates can be fun.
Author shadowplay Posted September 23, 2007 Author Posted September 23, 2007 No that's not normal. Double dates can be fun. Well, I guess it didn't help that my bf and I had nothing in common with the other couple.
Krytie TV Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Are you sure that you weren't just reading too much into their actions? Kinda looking for something to comment on that might not have been so glaring because you weren't interested in the other couple?
Author shadowplay Posted September 23, 2007 Author Posted September 23, 2007 ^I doubt it because my bf and I both noticed the competitiveness thing independently. I wasn't going to mention it to him since it's his friend but then he brought it up on his own and remarked on how ridiculous it was. He said they have a bit of a sibling rivalry going since they've known each other so long. I was just wondering if this was commonplace behavior on double dates, but apparently it isn't considering the responses so far. What generally makes for a more successful double date? I like the concept in theory.
Trialbyfire Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Double dates should be fun, where it's very similar to four friends going out and having a good time. If you're in the least competitive, you'll find yourself shooting some pool, as a team, whether it's boys against the girls or in your normal pairing. Put some pocket change on the table and then...it gets interesting, as long as you're all good sports and can take it. If you go see a movie, you should want to discuss the movie afterwards, maybe over a drink. A comedy is always good, because you can get the conversation going with a few good laughs about the movie.
