I have a scary abdominal pain. It's about half way between my right hip and my belly button, and is a sharp, piercing pain (but only when I laugh, cough, or flex my stomach).

This morning I was worried that I might have appendicitis or something, but while working out with my trainer I experienced pain only when doing lower-ab exercises. She indicated it might also be an ovarian cyst. Someone here at my office suggested a hernia (ha!).

How do I know if this is an emergency situation (i.e., appendicitis) where I need to get to a doctor ASAP, or something I can wait-and-see a few days on (the other ideas)?

Also, I have no nausea, vomiting, etc. My appetite is just fine. I simply wince and yelp after laughing or sneezing.

wow i hope not cause that sounds like the pains i was having a few months ago..... I would laugh to hard and all of sudden it would hurt like hell...... Maybe period pains?(thats what my friend told me I was having lol)Was it just today or has it been hurting for a while? Well if it hasn't been hurting for a while i guess you should sleep on it and see if it causes you pain tmw. If it does, get it checked asap.

I actually do have my period right now, but it's not that type of pain. This is a very sharp, localized piercing pain, not the diffused ache that covers my entire abdomen and lower back like when I have cramps.

I'm hoping I just overexerted myself working out my abs... But it hurts so bad I can't even go out and socialize tonight. :(

I've had ovarian cysts and yeah, they HURT LIKE A SONVABITCH!!! I ended up heading to the emergency walk-in clinic and they sent me to get an Ultrasound done the very next day (but told me that if the pain got really bad, or if I felt very dizzy, threw up, or had a fever to go to Emergency or call 911). Atfirst they did blood tests to make sure I wasn't pregnant and it wasn't an etopic pregnancy (another reason for you TOMORROW to go to the hospital or to a walk-in clinic.

Go get it checked out as soon as you can!

Hmm...I have my period right now, so I don't think I'm preggo...can you have an ectopic pregnancy and have your period? Either way, if it gets worse I will go to the doctor because I AM worried that it might be my appendix.

Maybe you need to use more Beano.

Silly. I wish that were it. I could just toot toot toot the pain away!

I agree, Get it checked out ASAP SG. Make sure they do a pregnancy test because bleeding is common with an ectopic pregnancy. Appendicitis is dangerous too. If the pain gets worse tonight have someone take you to an emergency room.

Yes. You also can be pregnant (non etopic pregnancy) AND be on your period at the same time. It's rare, but it does happen. Infact I know 2 people who had that happen to them. One was 3 1/2 months pregnant before she clued in and the other was 2 months pregnant.

Either way, if it gets worse I will go to the doctor because I AM worried that it might be my appendix.

If it gets worse go to the hospital or call 911. If it is appendix, it's best they get it out fast before it bursts. (Sorry, I don't want to freak you out, but if you're really worried, get it checked out now.)

It could be anything from just unusually crampy uterine muscles during your period, to an ovarian cyst(s), or really, just gas.

You don't have fever/nausea/intense pain (yet) - so it's probably not an infection.

It even could be idiopathic - meaning there really is no cause for the smooth muscle spasm. But do get it checked. They'll do a pelvic examination and probably give you symptomatic treatment with anti-spasmodic drugs.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had that problem a few months ago. The original thought was that I had kidney stones. My only suggestion would be to drink more water, though I get the impression you probably drink plenty of water already.

I just caught this thread and was wondering if you have seen a doctor and did you find out what the pain was from?

Posted

I've experienced a similar feeling before when I had a UTI that spread to the kidneys. It was like sharp sudden stabbing in between the hip and belly button as well as lower back.

SG, how are you feeling?

100% better. It slowly went away. I really think it was a muscle strain. Thanks for checking in on me!! :)
