cr8sea Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 How do people handle 9-5 jobs..., jobs such as secretary or receptionist. Ive been working as a therapist for a bit and im going to switch to receptionist bc of job estability....but im dreading the 9-5, clock watching, trying to find anything to do to kill time, thing.... Who do you people do it!!
SoHotZanzibar Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hey, I am new here but there are some benefits to 9-5. At least you have normal hours. My occupation, I am on call practically 24-7. Even on vacations I get interrupted. So from my point of view, 9-5 sounds good many days. Maybe the grass is always greener?
Road Rage Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Yeah, a schedule sucks doesn`t it. My life was better as a pirate upon the sea:(
Curmudgeon Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 In my work I have to be available when the Legislature and staff are available. That's pretty much 8-5, Mon. thru Fri. I also have to plan my vacations (just finishing one right now) around the legislative calendar. You get used to it and I NEVER have to hunt for things to do. There's always more than enough! I'm actually on-call 24/7 to our agency and the Governor's office but normally that doesn't interfere all that much.
stillafool Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 ....but im dreading the 9-5, clock watching, trying to find anything to do to kill time, thing.... Who do you people do it!! Well, I doubt if there will be much clock watching as they will keep you busy as heck doing something. You will have plenty to do to fill time.

uniqueone Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 How do people handle 9-5 jobs..., jobs such as secretary or receptionist. Ive been working as a therapist for a bit and im going to switch to receptionist bc of job estability....but im dreading the 9-5, clock watching, trying to find anything to do to kill time, thing.... Who do you people do it!! The trick is in getting a job you enjoy or feel comfortable with.....that way, you won't be watching the clock ever. I've had jobs where I watched the clock. Now, it seems like the day goes by too fast.
sb129 Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 If you are watching the clock you aren't busy enough! I work 9-5 and every 5 minutes is accounted for, makes 5pm come around very fast!
Blackfrost Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Geez....I don't remember 9-5 hours...I think the last time my hours were that easy, I was working a job that paid hourly wages vs. salary, and that was eons ago. I WISH I could find a job that paid as much, but only required 9-5 hours, I might actually be able to have a life again.
sb129 Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 See Blackfrost, the other day I was feeling down on my job, and bored. What you do sounds so much more interesting.... but I love the 9-5 aspect, once 5pm rolls around, I get my life back. Grass is always greener huh?

What you do sounds so much more interesting.... but I love the 9-5 aspect, once 5pm rolls around, I get my life back. Grass is always greener huh? Granted, I probably work alot more than I should (because I do love what I do - and my employer leverages that) but there are times when I wish I could just work normal hours, but unfortunately, when you set a stardard, people expect you to remain at that standard, or you're considered to be underperforming. I guess I can't complain, I am getting paid to do what I enjoy - but there are definitely days when the grass looks alot greener hahaha. Winning the Lotto looks alot greener to me lately
sb129 Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Winning the Lotto looks alot greener to me lately Amen to that! I like what I do.... I don't love it. I wish i could do something I loved. Ho hum.
amber1 Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Well the receptionists at my last job liked to ask people in other departments if they needed help. For example, help with filing, etc. You might want to try that.
Green Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 I would look for a job where your not going to be watching the clock being bored all day would be almost as bad as the worst job. there was this one 9-5 job I had where no one told me what to do and for the first month I just made stuff up till finaly my boss came and gave me an asignmet
katiebour Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I have had those kind of clock-watching jobs... I don't know how people do it year after year. I've worked reception and made $10+ an hour- and despised it. I now work as a cook in a university kitchen, working from 7-3ish, and I love it. Even though I only make $7/hour at this point, every time I get a little bored (I wrap pastries for about 3 hours in the morning) all I have to do is remember how much I hated answering the phones as a receptionist or working sales for Qwest. ANYTHING is better than those jobs. When you have a job you dislike or are bored at, you work for the check and watch the clock. when you have a job you love, you work for the fun of it, for the people that you work with, and the check and hours don't matter so much.

Haven't had a vacation in years that didn't get constantly interrupted by work. In fact, the last trip I took, I had to come back during the middle of it to go to work.... Hmmm. I bet we have similar occupations, SoHot? Many days I wish I had a 9 to 5'er with weekends off.... <sigh>

TogetherForever Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 I work 9 - 5 Mon thru Fri. I also get 2-15min breaks & one hour for lunch & it's all paid time. I work 6 & a 1/2 hrs a day & get paid for 8 hrs. Gotta love it. Oh & I don't have to watch the clock since I'm on a very busy switchboard & have loads of paperwork to do in between. I even have time to be here on LS.
