My apartment managers live on-site so I went to their apartment earlier to ask a question. They invited me in and showed me their apartment, when they showed me their bedroom the first thing I noticed is that they have 2 twin beds set up on opposite sides of the room. I have never seen a married couples room with 2 beds in it. Is this common? Do you know any couples who sleep in separate beds in the same room?

It would make sense to me if they had beds in separate rooms to prevent one from being woken up due to the others snoring but they are in the same room.

The ONLY time that I have ever seen anything like that was in a movie and the movie took place in the 1940's, so maybe that was something common back in that era.

My Grandparents slept in separate beds their whole marriage.

The beds were right next to each other ( a couple of feet apart ) so they slept in the same room

They used to say that they used to bother each other while they slept.. Rolling over and such.

I do think it was an era thing...

In the old days (20's,30's,40's) large beds like kings and queens weren't around for most people except the very rich.. Houses and Apartments didn't have large bedrooms or masters like we see today so the twin or full mattress was very common and they didn't sleep 2 people very comfy so the first chance some people got they would buy another twin or full and sleep separate.

Both sets of my Grandparents slept in twin beds their entire lives. For one set the beds were a few feet apart separated by a night stand. For the other set they were pushed together but still separate beds. I know for one set they did that because my one Grandfather has always suffered from nightmares from WWII and would thrash around at night.

I think the comment about larger size mattresses not being available is also a good point. I know my H and I were very uncomfortable when we tried to sleep on a full size bed when we first got together.
