Everyday, my parents complain about paying for college. I tell them if thats such a big deal I'll take out loans, or I will join the military even though I don't want to. It's an endless cycle. They make fun of me because i hate my job. I work at Applebee's and make little money because I do carside. I'm 18. I need to save money to help pay for college. My parents tell me I'm not saving enough, and I'm doing my best. They claim I don't appreciate them paying for my college. I really do, though. They say that whenever we get in an argument over anything it always goes back to that. They keep saying you better work when your in college. I tell them I'm 18, I'll take care of it please don't bring it up again. Everyday they bring that up too. Basically, I hate my job, my parents make fun of me for not liking it. I'm staying to become a waiter, but it hasn't happened yet. They claim I have literally a mental disorder and they just antagonize me. When I do it back they wave money in front of my face. When I say ok, I'll pay for it, they say OH LET'S HAVE 90,000 IN LOANS. I'm going crazy.... What should I do? Sorry I wasn't too clear. I would also like to add that I do not drink or smoke.. I haven't done or tried anything and I never get into trouble. When I say that they say thats no excuse for doing ____________. I can't win with them. I really am thinking about selling everything and buying a plane ticket to australia and leaving them.

Best thing to do is grow a thicker skin and ignore them when they start bitching at you. Whatever their real issue is (and there is something underlying it), you feed into it when you argue with them. Just listen with a blank stare, and then go to work or whatever else. Let it roll off your back. When they see they aren't getting a reaction out of you, they might stop.

Whatever their problem is, you can't control their behavior, just your own. So don't let them bait you and ignore it as best as you can.

I say your parents are very childish for acting like this. From what you say they don't seem happy. Has it always been like this your whole life? If so, your eighteen now, and it's time to start holding your ground. Yeah, they're your parents and there's no need to disrespect them, but are you going to let people bully you like that. I'm not saying take a jack hammer to them, rather be more assertive. It it takes you a couple of days to come out with something to say, then take the time to think about it. It sounds like your parents are very aggressive. They seem like the authoritarian type. If they keep on dangling your education over your head like that, then your just going to lose all motivation to go school, and eventually you'll drop out. I say, if it continues throughout the fall semester, it's time to look at other options. Grants, loans, scholarships, etc. Since your eighteen, the gov. goes by your parents finances until you turn 24. It's law. It's a stupid one, because most people are married with at least one child by that time, but that's laws for you. I use to work in a financial aid office, so I know everything there is to know.

I don't know what kind of school you are deciding on attending or attending already (university, junior college, etc.), but I do know that junior colleges are typically cheaper in tuition than university and private colleges.

There are so many ways to pay for school, ahh, what should I do?

1. Go to the financial aid office, or go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov to fill out a financial aid application. To fill out the application properly, you will need, your parents federal tax forms, and your fed tax forms for 2006 (prior year)

1a)There is no way to get out of having to use your parents info financial information, until you are 24, or you have a child, your parents are dead, you are emancipated, or you are a ward of the court (foster child)

2. A couple weeks after filling out the app, you will receive info in the mail regarding your app. explaining whether or not you qualified for assistance. I can tell you right now, that it all depends on how much your parents make. If they make like 50 g's a year and only have on child, you will probably not get a grant (free money the governement gives out to people based on need)

3. Whether or not you do receive a grant, the gov will also send you info on a student loans though the department of ed. (The interest rate on government loans are pretty low compared to those of a private bank or credit unions, but it all depends on where you go to get a loan and your credit score, etc.)

4. So, loans...How much can you take out...It all depends on your status

if you are either:

INDEPENDENT

OR

DEPENDENT

In the governments eyes you are considered "dependent" if you are under the age of 24 and one of the items listed in 1a don't apply to you.

OR

if Your "INDEPENDENT", you are over the age of 24, or one or more of the listings in 1a apply to you.

Independent students can take out up to $6,625.00 per/year

Since there are three semesters Summer, Fall, Spring people can get that split up accordingly. It all has to do with how many credit hours you are registered for too. It gets complicated. And it also depends on the classes your registered for and the school you are going too. I am refering to the school I worked at. I do know one thing, everyone is qualified for the same amounts and etc. Also, if you go to a University the amount goes up depending on your credit hours. Like I said, it's all very complicating. Check with your financial aid adviser.

DEPENDENT students can only take up to $2625.00 a year. and it could go up each year, depending on each college.

Have fun. Financial business never seems to be fun
