There's something I don't understand about some men: their obsession with toys. Big/ginormous trucks, fancy/fast/suped up cars, dirt/street bikes, Harley's, ski/speed/fishing boats, jet skis/waverunners, yachts/houseboats, humongous TVs...the list could go on forever.

Some dudes I know focus what I believe to be an obsessive amount of time on these "toys." They spend countless hours/days/weeks/months planning for their purchases, working on them in the garage, playing with them, etc. Some dudes actually pay more attention to their "toys" than they do the important people in their lives.

WHY?!

I mean, yes, women may have a shoe obsession, might be clothes horses, or obsessed with something else, but never to the detriment of a normal social life.

Isn't it true that the man who dies with the most toys still dies??

WHY?!??

because mens toys don't nag constantly and withhold sex and make them take out the garbage

WHY?!

Because obsessing about toys requires nothing more than linear thought... one of the only things we do well. ;)

At any rate, I think you will find that there is a strong negative correlation between the amount of time a man obsesses about toys and his ability to be emotionally available in a relationship.

That's just how guys are. Some of them are attached deeply to their toys.

My brother is terribly attached to his car and his motorcycle. He spends most of his sunday mornings taking care of his beauties. I remember I'd get irritated even, because if I needed to drive his car for some reason, he would nag me endlessly on how to "drive it right". He wasn't being mean though, just his quirky self (although it led to many lively bickerings back then).

When the toys become the only focus, that's obviously a problem. Like any other obsession, they fill in the blanks for whatever is lacking. Sometimes, those toys are the best that they have going in their lives.

Some guys are more into their toys than others. Just like some women are obsessive shoppers. Now, I consider myself a bit shopping-prone too, but I've seen women who are just plain greedy!

Boys will be boys. As long as they make amends later and treat you extra-nicely, let them have fun with their toys :)

I'll have to admit I'm a toy person so I can understand the interest. They're hobbies, just like the shoe and designer bag collections for women. :p

Because it gives them alternative modes of transportation to escape.

Motorcycles, Cars, Planes, Trains, Boats, Jet Ski's, Rockets, Submarines and Spaceships all modes of transportation.

They enjoy feeling free.

Not only guys... :p

But...

They don't provide a faster means of escape, unless you plan to use a miter or circular saw in ways that are not recommended by the manufacturer...

A hazard of being a guy...sometimes size isn't everything...

So are you saying... its not the size of the tool, but how you use it... The right tool in the right hands can create beautiful art?;)

Definitely a hazard of being a guy. Sometimes size isn't everything but it is something if they aren't very good at using it .

I'll leave it at that...

Sure it does. The 60" TV provides endless escapism into the wild west, the future, space, having perfect thighs (lateral thigh trainer - must get one), the huge breasts of the latest porn star...

The power tool provides an escape that comes without having to pay alimony/lawyers fees. Although you'd need to be pretty good at digging if you use it for that purpose.

this may be true SG but please remember that most of the stuff in our world was invented and built by boys who like to play with toys. if it wasn't for these boys we'd still be living in grass huts, wearing animal skins and playing tic-tac-toe in the sand

I don't know. I have 3 electric guitars in my bedroom and I trip over a huge amplifier every time I use the printer. It's okay though, I like the huge record collection and the nice tv.

My bf is pretty obsessive with music equipment, records and electronics but I never feel like he spends more time with them than with me. I think men usually turn to their toys overtime and avoid their wife/gf to do so when there's trouble.

Everyone has to have at least one hobby, but yes I know what you mean.

Some guys do go overboard with the time and energy spent with that stuff and I wouldn't doubt that a majority of those guys are now single or divorced.

That works too.

Keep in mind that digging requires more power tools or a bacco...
