Mistaken Identity Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I'm a 40+ single mom of two daughters--15 and 6. I'm in college again, studying for a degree in English. I'd rather be studying journalism because I think a journalism degree could lead to a job. I was accepted into another university about two hours away in Flagstaff (I'm in Phoenix) where I could get a degree in journalism. I have financial aid to pay for my courses. The problem is I own a historic house here that I would have to rent out. I'd have to rent something else up there. I'm worried about renting out my house because it has hardwood floors and I'm afraid tenants would ruin them. I can't afford to replace them. Then there's my teenage daughter who definitely won't want to move. Oh--and I have two dogs and a cat. How do I find a place who will allow all these pets? Am I worrying too much? Should I make plans to move and go to school this fall? Any well-meaning advice is appreciated.
polywog Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Is there any chance you could schedule your courses to be over consecutive days and commute? Maybe get a room or little place up there for the days you take your classes, and keep your kids and pets and home intact? My thought is that you could find someone you like and trust (and your kids like, maybe a relative) to stay in your home with everyone on the days you're in school. Just a thought. If you decide to rent your home, you could advertise in a historic home journal of some sort to get an experienced and sensitive tenant.
Diamonds&Rust Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Be sure to read up on what it takes to be an out-of-state landlord, also. You might have to get a property manager. Honestly, an English degree is extremely versatile, and highly desirable in many fields.
