mrmaximum Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 See, stuff like this just sounds like those old, paranoid warning videos about marijuana how if you take one puff it instantly turns you into a psychopath. I had my eyebrow pierced for 9 years and not once had an infection. I also got my ear cartilage pierced (the most recent one) back in August and have had no problems with it so far. In fact, the ONLY infection I've had in 10 years from piercing was one of my ear lobes when I first got it done. Ironically, the most common piercing out there. For every story you can point out about an infected piercing or an experience like sb129's I can point out one that went just fine. That's a TV SHOW. I'm guessing it's exaggerated. My brother got his tongue pierced and he spoke just fine with it. Hell, a girl I knew in band had two tongue piercings and could still play the clarinet well. I think you've been fed a lot of misinformation. I work in a bar on the weekends and I see a TON of modifications done. In fact several times a year a local tattoo shop comes to the bar to give piercings. I agree with Tan, there are more than a few people who get their tongue's pierced and I don't find out until MUCH later. I only find out by catching a glimpse of it while their talking a considerable some time down the road. It isn't quite as bad as you think LJ.
burning 4 revenge Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Okay, well that argument I can respect much more than some of the others in this thread. What about my argument tha tpiercings are totally bourgeois and passe and they make you look like you were manufactured by of the corporate machine?
tanbark813 Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 What about my argument tha tpiercings are totally bourgeois and passe and they make you look like you were manufactured by of the corporate machine? No, that's one of the hollow ones.
melodymatters Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 I've always heard that tongue piercing have a higher more dangerous rate of infection, as it can travel to the brain. Is that just propaganda ? ( plus I agree that a voluntary speech impediment, and the immediate gag reflex thought that they're doing it to give " better oral sex' prejiduces me againgst that particular piercing) But I find a lip piercing or eyebrow cute. Tattoes, on the otherhand I find disfiguring/distracting to the beautiful natural lines of the human body. Guess it all goes to show how different we all are in our perceptions of beauty. Its what makes the world go around after all, right ?
alphamale Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Most piercings aren't left in for life either. which would explain why you see few people over the age of 30 with them...they've grown up by then and realized they look moronic.

Dammit, and here I was hoping alpha would think I was hot.
burning 4 revenge Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 I pierced my eyebrow in 1992 on my eighteenth birthday. In 1994 I saw a Green Day video with that lead singer choad wearing a brow piercing. I took it out and threw it away.

burning 4 revenge Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Do you give lessons on how to be so cool? you're a funny guy and im not knocking you. but the purpose of this thread is to express our opinions of piercings and im giving mine, thats all.

ruby_gloom Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 I just had a long post and I accidentally deleted it. Maybe I shouldn't be posting while on the job? I'll try again later when I get home, although I'm 100 percent sure you know about my opinions on these sorts of things.
alphamale Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 I had a "tail" in 1985. It looked ridiculous. was that a genetic thing? we're only talking about self-induced modifications
Felixstowe Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I guess I could say I'm old fashioned and conservative in my view but I don't like tattoos in any format. Especially on a woman. Little tatoos aren't to bad. (If their there you have to put up with them anyhow.) But I still prefer none. Scarring is an even worse practice. As for facial peircings what can I say that isn't derogotary. So many beautiful young faces are detracted from by lip rings, eyebrow rings, tongue rings, etc. I personally don't mind belly rings, and ears are perfectly fine. Even a small ring through the side of the nose can be attractive. But nothing turns me off more than a lip or eye brow ring. There ugly, they don't add to a persons looks they detract from them, and I've known some *******s, who date girls with peircing specifically, because it usually means they have lower self esteem and can be easily co-erced into sex. (I've known my fair share of *******s.)
sb129 Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 It's true but that can also happen with an infected tooth. That is true. And to be honest, I would personally employ someone who had piercings over someone who had poor dental hygiene!!!! Each to their own I guess... Tanbark, I think your piercing suits you. Nobody has mentioned whether they think guys can pull certain piercings off better than girls. I think that in some cases (ie eyebrows) they look better on men. And if (when I have them) my kids want piercings or tattoos, I wouldn't want anything to happen to them at all, but I think I would be less keen for the GIRLS to have facial piercings/ visible tattoos. I think maybe just from my own experiences more than anything else.
Storyrider Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I forgot about this until just now, but I have a friend who is a HS teacher and has piercings. His nose and both his nipples are pierced. He is a punk from way back and never entirely gave it up. He takes the piercings out during the school year but wears them in the summer. He also likes to paint his toenails (he's straight and married, I think he just likes the shock value.) He says some kid always sees him at the pool with his piercings and passes on the rumor. And then at the beginning of each school year a kid always asks him if it is true that his nipples are pierced. And he always looks them in the eye and replies, "Where did you get an idea like that?"

Author dropdeadlegs Posted May 15, 2007 Author Posted May 15, 2007 Hey everyone, I still haven't had much opportunity to sit down with my girl one on one and go over everything that has come about from my initial post. We are caught up in graduation activities as well as our normally busy weekend just ending. I'll get back after our conversation about it all but wanted to say thanks again for all the input from all sides. Ultimately it is her decision, but you've helped so much in helping me to help her make an informed decision.
sb129 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I think thats the best you can hope for DDL- is that she makes a well informed decision. At least she is talking to you about it, I think thats great.

At least she is talking to you about it, I think thats great. Yes, it is so good that she is talking about it and I don't want to cause a communication shutdown in any way. She could have simply come home one day sporting her new facial jewelry. I feel very fortunate that we have very good communication. I also wanted to add that your posts from a medical/dental perspective have been very important to me. I will surely bring that information to our talk. Facial nerves was something I hadn't even considered, although dental damage had certainly come to mind. Thank you for sharing that particular viewpoint.
sb129 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 You are very welcome. Next time I will have to charge you! Kidding. Good luck DDL
Author dropdeadlegs Posted May 16, 2007 Author Posted May 16, 2007 sb129, Charge me...that's funny! I have had a dental question for months, and even considered asking you about it, but I decided that was crossing an invisible line. I know I need to just go to a dentist! LS is great in that so many people have varied knowledge and I once joked that I have a great memory as to who specializes in what and I could easily put two people together to solve many of life's little issues in a way involving knowledge more than opinion. To all that have contributed, I did speak to my daughter this morning and discussed the info here on this thread. I think she has some thinking to do. I pointed out literally every kind of response; the good/harmless posts, the support of doing this in the most safe way possible, the stories of disillusion with the decision, the stories of possible employment discrimination, and the decision to wait and be sure. She indicated that she has been giving this thought for quite awhile, but I got the impression that she would continue to think along some of the "new idea" lines I proposed. I don't think she will do it without bringing up the subject again, and if that happens I will be as supportive as I know how to be. It is her choice and I will still love her regardless of how she proceeds.
