How long does it take to get over that intial pain and shock of a breakup? I know it takes months and months to get over the whole relationship, sometimes longer. But how long does it take to get over that initial agony and feel like you can function normally again? Also, is it the same amount of time for a guy?

I was over the initial pain and shock in two weeks, until a bunch of bull**** happened. I'd say about month 3, now I am at 4. I feel I'd be fully over it by now if BS hadn't fallen in my lap. As it is, I'm guessing it will take 8 months total. That's what happens when you learn the previous ex proposed to the girl who broke your heart 2 weeks before the breakup.

Everyone is different. I can function normally but I suffer from depression not fully related to the breakup. I've been on a few dates and I interact just fine with women. But I'm not over the ex.

It took me six months to get over my ex. At that time, I no longer wanted to be with him in any way, and I also understood fully why we didnt and should not have worked out.

Fully get over the relationship itself? That's tougher. There are residual affects associated with any relationship. Some boost you up, others tear you down. For me, this last one was a downer. I have a harder time trusting people in general, especially men. Tragic, yes. But it is something that I will get over. Dont know how long that will take though. I will just have to learn to trust myself again.

To get over the initial shock? About 2 months

I think it depends on how long you were together and/or how serious the relationship was. I haven't been following your story (I should go back and read your other threads, forgive me), so it's hard to provide any guidance...
