I am not overweight - in the least bit - but I am out of shape. I bought a treadmill last fall and it has mostly turned out to be an extremely efficient tool for gathering dust despite telling myself to just pick a day and start working out!

I have always thought it would be enjoyable to be able to wake up in the morning and go for a run, but never had the dedication to make myself do it. The treadmill is the first step towards that for me in that I can get in some kind of reasonable shape before hitting the streets gasping for air in front of the neighbors.

I figured I should be able to jog at least a mile (last night was the first time). My treadmill records time, distance, etc..

After a third of a mile, I quickly realized my goal of 1 mile was not going to happen. I then adjusted my thinking and figured I would run 2/10ths, then walk 1/10th, then run 2 more, etc..

This works well, though I am pushing myself pretty hard.

Did it again tonight and feel ok. Then I came on here and read a little and it sounds like I'm asking too much of myself. Mentally I can make myself do it, but am I risking pulling something or causing some kind of injury?

I see I need some good running shoes though, so I'll get right on that ASAP.

As long as you stretch well before hand you'll be fine.

Keep the speed really low if you like, it doesn't matter how fast you go while your body is still learning, as long as you've crossed that line between walking and jogging you're set.

Take is slow but stick to a routine. The routine is what counts. However, if what you are doing doesn't hurt, stick with it. Stretch out before and stetch after and you shouldn't hurt yourself. Remember, everyone's body is different, what works for one person may not work for everyone.

Take your time and don't expect huge results right away, it takes time. Stick to it and in a month you will see improvement of some kind.

hey noone ever said that you will be able to do it from the first time. I had some trouble running after 1 week of not working out - I have worked out for 3 years every day - I do 3 mile run every day so it is crasy
